Got shocked when starting my CB

I've been having issues with the bike randomly not turning over when hitting the start button. I remember a couple months ago I saw a spark come off of the engine when I hit the start button. It still started.

Today I was starting the bike and turned on the right petcock while I had my thumb pressed on the start button. It felt like I was touching an electric dog collar.

Bad ground somewhere I take it? That may explain why it only starts sometimes with the electric start.

Thanks guys.

sounds like a bad earth, there should be a cable from the motor to the wiring harness connected to the earth on the battery.
it could have broken off or got crimped or it could be dirty with oil etc.

nice... I'm going to look for that. its a real stripped down cafe bike. Let's see what happens.

cool, if the PO has ripped the cable off and its earthing though the frame and tank it could start a fire or burn out thinner earth cables as it tries to find the easiest path back to the battery.
I would run a earth cable from the battery to one of the engine casing bolts if there isnt one on the bike.

Is this the wire? I only see this one and the wire that goes from the starter to the solenoid.

i dont know tthe bike but looking at the way its protected from touching the casing and going inside i would say no thats not it. it should go from the engine casing to the frame and another strap from the negative on the batt to the frame, or even better direct between the two
heres a shot of my earth strap on the sprocket cover
sorry photos up the wrong way

Ok. I don't see anything like that visible. I'm going to have to pull off the gas tank and look around.

The wire you are pointing to runs from your points to the coils.

Your kill switch or the wire that feeds it is likely grounding. Take it apart and inspect it.

.
Well, since you saw a spark on the engine, you might want to start there first and remove, sand/clean the wires in the area where you saw the spark.
.

Where was the spark? Does it hit you when you have the clutch pulled in or part way in? DID you remove the ground jumper wire under the Top fork clamp that goes from the fork riser bolt to the clamp itself? Honda twin handle bars are rubber mounted and so are isolated from the rest of the bike, they have their own ground cable. IF that is missing the only other thing that grounds the bars is the clutch cable which doesn't do a very good job at times.

I'm back. The spark was around the top of the engine. I just took the tank off and found this piece hanging there.

.
that is a turn signal relay and it might not work unless it is grounded but i doubt it . . sand around the bolt hole and bolt it back up.

I do not have turn signals on the bike, but I just bolted it up to the same bolt the grounding wire is on in the first pic.

.
what year and size is it?

looks like it mounts to the upper rear horn bracket bolt on the left side of the frame . . this will be on the outside of the ignition switch . . there ids a hole in the switch bracket for the tab to insert into . . the tab goes forward and the relay points up.

that schematic is awesome.. going to try that. Do you think that could cause my issue? The ground wire is going to my battery and a thine green wire is also on the negative terminal.

.
that should be a turn signal relay so it should have no affect on anything and in fact, it is probably not what was sparking . . the spark is a bad ground and is probably the cause of the starter not working . . just connect 12 volts directly to the starter for a second and see if it turns over.

well, I mounted that relay. I also cleaned and tightened every wire/connection that touches the frame. The thing fired right up. I held on to the petcock while starting and there is no more current going through it.

Before that I bridged the starter relay and the started worked perfect.

I've been on this forum on and off for a while but never really needed help. Thanks to all that posted.

OK, xlnt, bad grounds are common . . glad it works now.

Ground is key as my bike kept blowing fuses b/c my frame/engine ground had become a little rusty. Cleaned it up and tightened it up and all is well
