GR650......starting over for the last time

Good point Joe......update your thread! Haha....

I know I'm overdue :'( That's why I like to live vicariously through your thread! Lots going on though behind the scenes... I'll try to get something up this weekend.

No problem Joe - I've been in those shoes before.

So this showed up today:

From a Bandit 1250 (same as a second generation Bandit 1200). I looked it over before heading to work, and it definitely has a wider fork spacing than my current triple...... by about 5mm, which is about what I shaved off the axle spacers to get the wheel centered. I didn't get a chance to accurately measure the stem lengths, but throwing a scale on each one shows about an inch difference.

Rich the bike is coming along quite nicely! Also its cool to see someone using some bandit parts on a build, those front calipers will do great for ya. (anxiously awaiting the pending stoppie pictures)

Ok, so I've been preoccupied lately but I did get some time in the garage last night. I think I have the front end issue solved, but I'm waiting on parts to confirm that...... first thing first though - engine got pulled from the frame:

Here are the lower frame mounts:

I bent the tubing with a propane torch (both tubes at the same time so they are symmetrical). And the "cross tube" in between the frame mounts is just a tube with 6mm nuts welded in. With that tube, any pressure from wind pressing on the fairing will be pressing on the tube - not the frame tabs I welded on.

And I worked on the upper fairing / mirror mounts too.

All the nuts & bolts are just what I had laying around, and will be replaced when the time comes. There is still a bunch of cleaning up to do around the edges, but it feels good to have all that frame work out of the way.

Thanks fellas. I appreciate the kind words.

My boss has been on vacation all week, so I've been bringing in the fairing mounts and cleaning up the welds with a die grinder. I get too busy in the garage to sit and grind a 3" long weld, but pay me to do it for 12 hours and I'm more than happy to do it.....

New steering stem coming in the mail tomorrow, so I'm hoping that will get the front end moving along too.

Steering stem showed up today - good news! It looks like it will make everything fit perfectly. Here's a comparison (Bandit 1250 on the left, Katana on the right):

The new stem is from a 98-06 Katana 600 / 750. The reason for the 98-06 stem is because the upper portion that sticks thru the top clamp is identical to the Bandit, so there's no messing around with that. And the length of the Katana stem is perfect for the GR frame. Some time over the next couple days I'll be pressing the Kat stem into the Bandit lower.

Hey Rich. You know I have a few Katana front ends.Eliminate that spliter on the lower tripple for the brakes. It's been a source of pain on more than one occassion. It may not leak but they will hold an air bubble foreva.Check this place out. They were doing quality dual line kit for a good price. http://katriders.com/vb/showthread.php?t=92494

Thanks Ben! The splitter won't be used by me though. When I bought the triple tree on eBay, it just happened to include the splitter, top clamp, etc. All I need is the stem itself and the upper nut for the stem.

Good deal on those lines though! I've gotten some from this guy on eBay before:

Awesome!I am thinking about going back to my GS front end on my black GS and use my Kat 750 front end on my touring GS.It will hold the weight better with the loaded bike.I have a complete disassembled front from a Kat 650,with brakes.I haven't decided what direction I want to go with that front end. It's a good canadate for a full Racetech build. The last one I did got rave reviews from the owner.

Pressed out and swapped steering stems yesterday:

Happy to say they everything went together nicely.

Hey Rich, hope you don't mind me asking in your thread but I'm starting in on making the brackets and mounts for my fairing now and just wondering what size tubing you've used there. I have some rod and tube here in the garage that I'm going to use to do my mockup, but it may actually be sufficient for the real one. I was out looking at some the other day and really wasn't sure what size was best. I want the strongest but didn't want to go overkill with it. This is my first time building something like this so not really familiar with what to use. Is yours hollow tubing or solid rod? If hollow, how thick are the walls? I'm especially concerned about the main front harness that will be holding the most weight.

Not a problem at all Deacon. I can't recall exactly what size everything is off hand (since I used different material on certain parts) but I'll be happy to check tomorrow when I get off work.

I do know that the lower mounts are 1/2" OD tubing, same as the straight section of the upper mount. The wall thickness is what I'm uncertain of though. The only solid steel rod is on the upper fairing mount, between the straight tube and the backbone of the frame - and it's 3/8" OD. The stock GSXR mounts around the headlight......I have no idea what size the tubing is.

And I have to say, everything does feel really solid. Not enough to handle a slide of course, but I can't imagine anything bending due to wind pressure.

And as an update to the thread: I got next to nothing accomplished this week. The big news is that I may have to remake the entire upper fairing mount - the new triple tree raised the forks ever so slightly and now the preload adjusters on the Bandit forks interfere with the fairing mount. Not by much, so I might be able to get away with dropping the forks in the clamps an 1/8" or so.
