Guzzi Cali Cafe - Build Thread

Yes, those tanks decals look very familiar ! A bit too red for me, what made you decide to paint the whole engine red too?

On a different note, I collected in new 'project' yesterday.... 8 weeks old and already 8kg, meet Barney the Golden Retriever...

What can I say ? I was in my "Red" period !!!!

The cooling fins were polished before it was sold [ no pix ] and there were a few bits of polished alloy around the place to break the Red up.

I have to say that the stainless Lemon exhausts and Contis livened it up. But hey, this WAS 30 years ago when I was a mere lad of 42 !

The decals were genuine Guzzi dealer items and were the proverbial arm and leg - but worth it I thought.

Also painted my Davida Jet helmet this week, my first attempt at Pin stripes too... wasn't as tricky as expected. Choose black and gold as that's a colour combo I want to use on my next project, so this made a good practice run. That said, I think the gold stripe is a bit too wide, so next time I'm bored, I may well repaint it again. The paint hasn't been cut back and polished yet in the pic, as it needs a few days for the paint to harden fully.

The Moto Guzzi decal pretty much determines how wide the stripe is. Judging by that I'd say it's about right, without the logo then any width is possible?

Classic and classy.

yep, that's why its as wide as it is, though I think I could've made it a few mm thinner, and the logo would still look ok.

Bike was sold to a Danish bike dealer before it was completed ! He saw a pic of it and made the proverbial offer I couldn't refuse.

Yea .................................. wish I still had it. :-X

Do you remember which Danish Dealer? Ry MC? could be fun to trace it down and see if it's still alive

Perter,

I will try to find the original paperwork. He was a real Cafe Racer enthusiast ! It would certainly be great to know if it is still pounding the roads !

I don't want to hijack the thread but let me know if I can help.

If you still have the VIN, you can look it up in the public Tag register to see if it's on the road: www.nummerplade.net - VIN = "Stelnummer"

Now its finally warm enough for me to venture into the garage again, its time to continue on with the Guzzi project. So I'll post some updates soon.

In the meantime another project is coming along well...

Quite a difference between 3 months and 5 months old !

my dane and wolfhound love all the retrievers they get to play with down the park, they claim them to be the most absorbent of all other dogs when it comes to removing that pesky drool (and they're nearly as silly as my two)

Not sure about the drool, but Barney will play in any mud or water he can find.. I have a playlist of weekly Vlogs on Barney on my Youtube channel, from him being 9 weeks old till now. More for friends and family than anyone else, its amazing how quickly he's growing up.

While back to the Guzzi, just making a start again.. https://youtu.be/YPmzIXlC4ck

The Guzzi is by a long margin my longest running project, I haven't touched it for nearly a year, but now finally I can work on it once more. The long break has caused me to rethink a few things, and I'm already into changing some of the work I've done in the past.

Firstly, all the electrics have been removed and instead its getting an M-Unit from MotoGadget along with matching switches. I've got the M-Unit fitted to two of my other bikes now, and since I'm impressed with it, decided to add a third to the Guzzi. The only thing I don't like about it is the price.. £245 retail, plus you need to use momentary contact handlebar switches to (if you want to use all the function it has to offer).

Once that's been done, the next change will be to the seat unit.. I've reluctantly concluded that the Ducati SS900 Desmo seat its using now just doesn't look quite right.. its too long and slightly too narrow. I've not found anything out there that I like and would fit the frame rails so far, so I may end up having to make my own, we'll see.

While fitting the tank and seat to check clearance for the wiring loom, I had to finally accept that I made a mistake in fitting the seat unit from a Ducati SS900 Desmo. They look great on the Ducati, but somehow it doesn't quite work on my Guzzi. Its too long and too narrow and just doesn't look right to me. The first two pics below show the bike from the rear which makes the seat look shorter and not bad looking, while the second pic is a side on view which shows the problem.. or is it all in my head and it actually looks fine lol.

From the day I fitted it I've had my doubts, but its difficult to bin it after the expense of the thing. Perhaps if my bike had a half faring like the Desmo it would look better, more balanced, but I don't want to fit a half fairing, so therefore it needs a different seat.

Having searched the internet for hours, haven't found anything that would fit the frame and look good, so will just have to make my own.

The last pic is the sort of seat I'm looking to make..
