Hmmm... DTT race bike?

Druro

Noel... stay outta my profile... wanker.
I had a though... a bright light... an epiphany even (has to happen once...).

What about starting a DTT Race team to compete in VRRA? My thinking was based on seeing this potential:

http://toronto.craigslist.ca/yrk/mcy/563464302.html

and how great it would be to build a race bike. My thinking is a team is formed which contributes time/money/resouces/Noel's black paint mastery/etc and we build a bike to campain in the league next year. I think that this could be a neat "club bike". It would be a way to meet new people/racer, connect with more of the vintage crowd and have seriously fun weekends (i think there are 4-5 races a year).

Dunno... good thought or no?

I've thought about that too, but it's a lot of time dedication that I just can't commit to.
That and whoever is riding needs to complete the VRRA course, which I just don't have time for.
I'd be happy to help wrench though.

I thinks thats an amazing idea!!..
However, the most I could contribute is some wrenching time & paint ;D
Seriously.. think about it.. do you guys REALLY see me on the track??!!.. BHAHAHAH!!!..
But hey, if you guys can pull a team together, I"ll be there for you guys!!

I gave the idea of those people who want to race and such a bit of though. I've been planing on racing in VRRA for awhile and I intended to take the course at some point (when is another question right now). I'm sure that others might be interested in that as well, as I think that having multiple riders would be a key point, both for fun and so that the team could compete in as many races as possible.

I'd have to review the rules, however there may be multiple classes the bike can compete in, which would allow more riders to compete as well.

I think that it would be a cool idea, especially coupled with the idea of having booths at the shows next year ("Come one, come all, see the DTT race bike!!!")

I've checked out the rules a number of times and yes there are a number of classes. Note that there's one big class from 70 -79. I'd say we try for an earlier class unless you want to put together late 70's monster.

A bike i was considering was the CB350. They are relatively easy to come by, and can run in a couple of different classes, including an early one. A big part would be trying to use some of our cast off parts and such. The key i think is keeping the price down, as it would make it more fun for us.

Would could put around the collection plate... 600+ members @ $5 a person ends up as alot of money for a club bike. Dunno about that idea but it's something....

Very interesting... here is a ruling on the CB350 bikes:

HONDA CB/CL/SL/350 twin cylinder machines, in order to be eligible for Period 1 GP, are limited to
stock original equipment engine internal and external parts as originally fitted to these models. No parts
designed for another model of Honda or any other motorcycle may be used. No aftermarket
components are allowed except for valve springs. Carburetors cannot be greater than 30mm choke size
and may be any Period 1 legal model, round slide Keihin or Mikuni.. Ignition systems may be after
market and/or electronic. NO MODIFICATIONS WHATSOEVER by any machining or chemical
process may be made to the engine, intake tract, carburetors, or any other engine component. The only
modifications allowed are the removal of the electric starter, alternator components and the fitting of a
racing style exhaust. The rolling chassis must be of a racing style as per Period 1 rules.
Correspondingly, modified Honda CB/CL/SL 350 twin cylinder machines, which deviate from the use
of stock original equipment engine components, are moved to the Period 2 Supervintage Lightweight
class.

If a DTT member decided to get into the VRRA, or for those members who are already members and racing, I'd love to see them wave the DO THE TON flag in the form of a decal on their bike or what have you in exchange for support from our membership. Spare parts, wrenching etc. would I'm sure be appreciated by many.

The site itself has no finances to contribute unfortunately (or fortunately frankly).

For my part I'd be happy to contribute some mechanical labour and parts where I can. I don't have any special skills or tools though - not a machinist or welder.

So who wants to be the ginuea p... uh I mean rider?

I would love to contribute with the building and racing of a DO THE TON race bike. Unfortunately I'm a little far away here in Arizona. I am going to be building my KZ750 twin into a Vintage Middleweight Race bike for the Roadrace Southwest here and in New Mexico, it should be a ton of fun.
I'd be happy to help with monetary and parts donations if and when this takes place!
Matt

Whatever support I can lend...got some metalworking skills, and can certianly get materials cheap...but that's about it.

Maybe just supply a pit pavilion.

Don't forget the stiletto heels and whip! Meow!!! LOL ;)

:p thanks for the votes of confidence. Hope to be wrenching this year. :) soon.

Oooh. this is a cool idea, druro. I was actually thinking of building aa vintage racer in a couple years once all the current projects are done/mostly done. I was also considering racing one of the FZR's in P4 once I get my track skills a bit more improved. The bike should be ready by spring, as I just buttoned up the motor last night. But if we do decide to do a collaborative race team, count me in for both riding and wrenching.

(PS. I've seen Equus use that whip - can unsieze bolts at 10 paces!)

Dude ... two points;
1) You're nickanme is the curse ... think about that for a minute ...
2) As the rider, we should change your name to Guinea Pig

Just remember that the curse only seems to affect those I ride with... so that means everyone else on the track with me will break, but I won't. Hey, does that mean I'll be able to cruise to the championship?
And I don't remember coming from Guinea... hmmm....

(PS Noel... shh! don't spread that stuff around - everyone will want one!)

BHAHAHAA... Fugue has my vote to be the DDT Racer... It would hilarious to see all the other riders wonder why the fuck their, baffles blow off, their motors blow up, their wheels come off!! their chains go flying...etc..etc...
It would be easy street for us right up to the checkered flag!!... I'll even let you wear my Chica Magnet Simpson helmet!!... ;D
