Picked up a 72 cb350 about a month ago. I have been reading but not posting much. I got the 2 rolling chassis 1 titled. and 3 engines for 400 bucks. There was a box o random parts too. ALot of good stuff.

In the last pic i had stripped and sanded the one tank i have. I had a really awful mishap when attempting to get the bike to run before tearing it down. Lit the bike on fire. I posted all about it in another thread any how here is the results.

so scratch that tank. And i decided to just tear it down at that point. My wife is really pissed at this point. Below are the painted bits black with appliance paint. decided to paint the front fork shocks black. I would also like to remove the rear shock covers and paint those shocks but i cant figure out how to tear apart the rear shock.

I polished some of the shiny parts . I know i could spend a year getting these perfect. But that is truly not the look i am going for. I Like a vintage bike to look vintage not perfecct and new. Clean and old. Plus im lazy.I did some tune up stuff on the engine. It has good compression 160 and 150 , I replaced the points, I adjusted the valves. I drained the oil and pulled the engine. I degreased cleaned and masked off the engine. I need to get some new gaskets since removing the case covers i split one and also split the head gasket. I wonder if i need all new ones or if i can make some from gasket paper??? or if i can just roll with the split ones. they aren't really too bad but i think i'll just get some new ones. I primed the engine. I am going to paint the engine black and leave the side covers, and head shiny....

so that's where i am, NExt up is to scratch up the other tank. and start to reassemble. I am a little worried about putting that steering bearing system back in place. i have plenty of balls.......pause for laugh...... but have seen alot of folks replace them. I don't mind keeping the original system . But it's daunting. anybody done it with some words of wisdom. Next time i"ll post larger pics still getting the hang of this.

got some parts on the frame. Rear end on. got that steering stem figured out and popped on the front wheel. I ordered up some I mikuni and k&n filters. I need some parts to really progress at this point. May have to wait to get paid again. I chopped the rear fender and rolled it in. Not sure how I like it yet but do want to have a bobbed fender I like that look. Thinking about doing more of a brat style flat seat with a raised brake light on the tail. Not sure if i will leave the tank raw like this> i like the idea of a really stripped down bike and that fits the bill. Plus it's cheap. anyone have ideas on how to condition a raw tank to prevent rust>??? do i need to clear coat it or you think that it will stay fine with just some wax???

got the engine in the frame today. padded the frame with some pipe insulation like I read in the mod thread. worked awesome still dinged up the paint a bit but oh well. I will just have to touch it up later. Wrestling the engine in is no joke man. I also got my carbs in the mail so put them on the engine just to see how it looked. Looks swizzle sweet. wrestling those bad boys on was a hell of a lot of fun too. BIke is starting to look like a motorcycle again. Placed a big order with dime city. ... awaiting goodies. Next up is to beautify tank a bit. including derusting and cleaning petcock. Also gonna start trying to figure out wiring. If anyone has a good simple wiring schematic they can share that would be awesome>>>? also got to figure out battery placement /pan??

Oh forgot to mention I got the speedo mounted too. Just drilled a hole in the center of the old mount and mocked her up no problem and looks period Love it.
held up exhaust just to check it out. I actually like the look of the stock exhaust. I think that is a stock exhaust. no words on it. Baffles are still in and everything. I know it's basic but i think it is looking sweet.

Exactly what model carbs and pods have you got on your bike? They look great.....
they are mikuni vm30 with k&N filters. Ordered them off ebay in a set pre jetted from streetfightermadness. included a tuning guide throttle cable just like the set from dime city. Would have bought from them but they were sold out. Plus these were a tad cheaper but not really cheap at all. cost $322 shipped. But if my wife asked they were $150

got the bike wired yesterday. sawed up this pan and fixed it to the frame it worked out better than i thought. I am making it a kick only bike so eliminated the starter equip. I hope i got this thing wired up right. seems pretty simple. It took me forever to solder all this crap together. I eliminated the blinkers and am only running headlight, tail light brake lights. I relocated the ignition switch to under the seat. I think it works well there and eliminates more wire clutter. I put the exhaust back on and i really like the lines of it. I know alot of people do some crazy welded aftermarket thing but i really think those pipes look pretty nice. considering doing wraps on the headers but they are not close to crusty look pretty shiny probably just leave well enough alone. Next up i will prob derust and seal the tank. I would like to get some custom painted wicked black wings painted on the tank something understated and mean. Just need to sequester a good artist. I also am going to start getting on building a seat. I am torn between buying one and making one but i think i will make one so i can get it perfect to how i want it and it sits perfect on the rear fender.

I would suggest trimming that electrics tray back a bit, the tire could hit it at full suspension compression. Otherwise, looks pretty BA!

i didn't think of that but i would be surprised if I bottomed it out. I am going to force the rear of the pan up a bit when i place the rear fender. I am a little worried about too much height on the rear though I really wanted to keep the seat hump understated and still have to jam a battery under there. I will prob have to chop that weird fender hump peice on the rear frame to accomodate the battery. will that affect any frame stability?? do i need to brace the frame elsewhere to compensate. I wouldn't think so but safety is one of my main concerns at this age.. lol

Stock shocks are 12.75". Not sure what the travel is off the top of my head but it would be a good practice to take the shocks off and measure the compressed length and see where the tire ends up.

been a couple days time for an update. I got a box of goodies from dcc. Thanks fellas. I put in new coils and wires. sparks much stronger than stock. New plugs, clubman bars put on. Got the mikuni carbs put in place and cables hooked up. Got new clutch cable, new brake cable all hooked up and adjusted. Put the chain still very good condtion, cleaned, lubed and installed. Did some hand hammered knee dents.... wasn't gonna but they look sweet came out much better than the last tank i had done. I did go a little to far forward on the left side hopefully i can get the edges cleaned up with some glazing putty. Don't have the dough to paint now so i am waiting on the body filler and primer. I got a new tail light but i am not sure if i really like it. Its the dcc Lucas style tail light. I had on on my triumph thunderbird but not sure if it fits this bikes "smallness" as well. I actually got the bike to fire up. Sadly it runs crazily. IF ANYONE CAN HELP WITH THIS PLEASE CHIME IN> I got the bike to fire up. It will only fire with the choke on. WHen it did start, and it did a couple times, It goes into this incredibly high idle, no matter the idle screw setting. Its beyond what should be even capable with the idle screw adjust. I have a bunch of other jets for the carbs but am not really sure what is going on if anyone can help that would be awsome. STay tuned.

For the high idle issue, check and make sure you do not have air getting in through the carb boots.

would air make it idle like crazy though? I don't really understand that I looked at some vids on the tube about spraying around carbs with some starter fluid to see if idle changes but in my case i can't keep the engine running long enough (for fear it will explode) to check anything. How can i tell if there is an air leak.. and by what science does more air equal a higher rpm???? sorry I am more of a cosmetic mechanic i am trying to get my functional mech boots on.

I have 2 extra engines I will try replacing the gaskets and tightening everything up again. I don"t want to start changing up jets unless I have this figured.

You say you put new throttle cable on the mikuni? Did you have to cut them to fit? If so, is the slide/needle in the carb seating all the way down? Could happen if cables are cut to short. You also installed clubmans which can change the throttle cable routing which can make the idle go crazy. Just something else to look at.

I did install the throttle cables and they seem to be moving freely and cut to length I soldered them myself so slides could be sticking idk when looking into carb it looks like they are perfect and throttle feels pretty good although it isn't the smoothest. I think that the cables aren't that great may be the issue there. I am going to try disconnecting the cables and seeing how it runs with carb on strictly on choke and hopefully get it to run with the choke off on idle. Was also not shifting into 2nd gear but seems to be loosening up. We will have to see tomorrow. Kinda frustrating but it was cool to see that old engine kicking even if it was revving high. Sounded pretty.
