part 2

having fun with the how-to's, giving me a chance to go through the trove of photos on my computer and put some good info together

Awesome, I picked up an industrial Pfaff machine last year and just started working on my sewing techniques and stitch types, having a lot of fun with it and getting some great results, though I haven't built a seat yet.

I have an old chopper seat with some of the nicest upholstry i've seen, the rivits had metal washers under them with punched out leather washers under the metal washers.

Thank you for sharing this. I might give this a try ( although I should probably just buy one to avoid the pain and suffering )

I think I will have one of the more dramatic "before and after's" when I get a new seat done. Anything is better than what I have now !

Looks great Sir! Last night I purchased a Singer 401a, I can't wait to mess around with the different stitch cams.

Looks awesome. I just attached my marine vinyl to my fiberglass seat with staples. Did not work very well. Wish I would have seen this two hours ago. Oh well. Great write-up!!

Sticky??

Thanks for this, I've been working on building a brat style seat with a fiberglass pan and found this just in time.

Great write-up! Now, my upholsteryguy is constantly nagging about how nice it would be if i could deliver me seatpans in plastic. You know, the type of plastic factory bikes have as pans. Does anybody know what material that is and where to get it?

It's probably PVC like this:

It's $15 for a 2'x4'x1/4" piece.

I use UHMW, it's similar. Ultra High Molecular Weight plastic, not too soft, not easily cracked, great with vibration. I buy it in 4'x8' sheets from a local plastics warehouse for $24 a sheet! Love the stuff.

What thickness do you use? Can it be heated and bent?

Thanks! I'm glad I found this. I've been making some seat pans for my CB550 out of fiberglass. I've made two so far. The first one was terrible but the second one was pretty good. This sounds about 1000 times faster and cleaner and solves my problem of not being able to staple into the pan.

Thanks for this information - this stuff has many uses on bikes!

Check out its properties: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra-high-molecular-weight_polyethylene

Crazy

I learned about it in the kart racing world. I operated an indoor kart racing track for quite a while and used UHMW to enclose the karts, it holds up very well to abrasion, impact, and heat. It generally comes in a dark speckled color, but if you need solid black, request Ultra Virgin UHMW haha :)
