Opportunity to purchase a DT175 has arisen. Just wondering if any of you have owned one of these and what your general impressions are?
Are OEM/aftermarket parts easy to source? I'm finding one of the biggest issues with the kz250 to be the large amount of discontinued parts...
I'm thinking this would be a decent bike to learn on while I work on the kz. It supposedly starts but the electricals aren't great.
I don't know anything about 2-strokes so is ther anything I should be wary of in the event of a rebuild? I think I've learnt a bit more after buying the kz...at least now I know to check if an engine is seized etc. is there similar thins to check for that's different for a 2-stroke?
I know there's a couple guys here that have DT's. Justin Longhorn is working on a 250 and Bradj has......well.......Yamaha 2 stroke oil in his blood. I've never heard either complain about them yet.
No complaints is a great start. And there seems to be a decent amount of parts for it too. Now I just need to read up more on 2-strokes so hopefully I'll know what to check out for when I go inspect it on Monday...
Be great to have something to ride (or more correctly, learn to ride on)
Good for bopping around hilly Sydney's back streets.Top bike to learn on in after hours car parks.Wear a poxy yellow safety vest and have a few traffic cones and cops will leave you alone even if you have no"Vere are your Paperz?".....
LOL i will try that. Hopefully it does just ting ting ting as you say - I've been watching youtube clips to get a sense of how the engine should sound. My wrists are a pain in the ass and they make me rather cautious, but it sounds like an awesome bike.
Here's an example of inflation for you but - guy got this from aus ebay with heaps of new features, the seller rebuilt the thing himself...
Anyone have a pdf of the service manual at all? Even if its just the first couple pages with the specs and some general info. Looks like yamahaenduro is down too as people have been saying...
It would be great if its that simple. For the moment but, I can't even work out if it runs a 6v battery or there's no need as it has a magneto? Based on CMSNL, it uses a CDI ignition, but from the image and videos on youtube, it generally seems to be a kickstart?
175MX is a great bike.
Much lighter and better handling than the 250.
Suffers from 'Yamahop' but all the mono-shock Yams are the same in that respect
Only real weak point is kickstart shaft as motor kept getting 'stretched' from the 100cc design.
Not a big deal as they are still available from Yamaha or aftermarket and you only need to remove clutch cover to fit a new one
Main bearings and rods wear out but are quick and easy to replace (I could do a full motor strip/re-build in 4 hrs, 6 if I fitted a new con rod to crank)
You can also fit a water cooled 250 Honda 3 wheeler/quad top end to Yam case.
Makes about 45bhp but breaks things real quick ;D
Seller for the 80's DT replied with a pic. The main issue seems to be that the fuel tap leaks when the bike is stopped. From my very basic understanding, can this most likely be rectified by replacing the petcock?
Here's a pic. Slightly dented tank and a bit of surface rust by the looks of it - especially on the exhaust.
If you have the money, buy it. A Yamaha 2 stroke single is about as simple and reliable as an old smaker gets. Like PJ and others stated, you can rebuild the motor in an afternoon.
Lol saw both of them. Came back empty handed. The red one was asking $1500, the guy felt his new handle bars and other 'resto' work was worth that much. Mechanically, the bike took a long time to kick start and rode funny in first. The blue one didn't start at all, and the owner said the battery wasn't holding charge now. But he was still asking for $500.
PJ, is the issue with the kickstart shaft the same as the issues I'm reading about with snapped woodruff keys? These are on the crankshafts and spin the timing plate around.
Just curious cos the seller was really nice. The bigger issue was there was no spark.
Kickstart is completely different to crankshaft.
The taper gets messed up because of bad maintainance (Usually flywheel has been removed and not torqued tight enough)
Flywheel spins causing sheared key which causes more damage to taper.
DT is a CDI bike, runs fine without a battery, just blows all the light bulbs ;D
I don't have 175 manual but I do have 200cc 'Blaster' ATV manual somewhere
The engines are almost identical
You will probably need manual to set/check oil pump as well as the wiring diagrams
I'll see what I can do later
