My kickstarter gear is gone!

What would you replace the grear and the counter gear that's on the transmission?

Huh? Where did the kick starter gear go? Did it leave angry?

I would replace the broken and missing parts....

Is this on a motorcycle? Moped? Something new, something old?

Is there a particular model, brand, year of motorcycle you would like this information on?

Maybe a little more information may help us help you....

Yep it left pretty hangry...

The first gear is the gear that its riding on. I'll change it... you can see marks on it.

So it's not "gone" it's damaged. And it damaged another gear on another shaft.

Both need to be replaced with appropriate replacement parts.

You don't think that the kickstarter gear is gone? Did you looked at the picture? Its missing 4 toots, its not "damaged"... its "Gone"...

The other gear on the transmission will be replaced.

Gone=Missing
Broken=damaged but not missing

That being said I'd replace them both.

No, I don't think it's gone. It's clearly visible. In fact it's mostly in tact so even if the term "gone" were meant to denote extreme damage to the point of destruction, it's still not gone.

When you're asking for technical advice, it pays to be clear about what you're asking. When I see a post about something being "gone" and a photo is posted, its pretty damn confusing to see that the part is not, in fact, gone, but present, albeit damaged.

Sorry...

Might be a language misunderstanding.

What I meant is not gone like missing but gone like "gone for good".

Anyway thanks for the answers.

Did that happen to one of you?

I hope it doesn't happen again...

Not a kickstart gear, but I did have a synchro gear fail on a Triumph. The shaft was marred and the mating 2nd drive gear was chewed up a little like yours. I replaced the synchro and the shaft but elected to leave the drive gear in.

Just a heads up...

If you had a gear shear off four teeth and damage the corresponding gear INSIDE your engine, just replacing the two gears ain't gonna cut the mustard. That motor needs torn down, cleaned THOROUGHLY, and rebuilt.

I agree with Yinz. That motor is going to come apart one way or another - were it me I'd do it on the bench rather than on the highway

Also, after a thorough cleaning, put a magnet on the oil drain plug, because you don't want hard steel pieces floating around in the oil

I hear you guys... But the engine didn't even start after the kickstarter gear brake... Not even a bit... Didn't had time to circulate oil...

Well, I think that some formalized articles on Cafe's, "garage" projects, things of that nature.

Having a place where tips and tricks would be real handy.
Just so we are clear I was expecting to remove all the transmission and cleaning everything down bellow.
