KLR You Experienced? I am now...

Re: KLR You Experienced? Not really.

Me and a mate heading up to the Laurentians this eve - will make sure I've got a plug wrench in the bag and see what gives.

Well I'll be dipped in shit.

It's only taken a couple of years, but I finally got the bottom of my rich carb situation and rough idle. Went for a ride with a mate the other day up into the hills, and while hoovering down a poutine it occurred to me that maybe the pilot jet that I've been assuming was a size 40 because it has 40 stamped into it wasn't 40 after all. Maybe a PO had reamed it out, made the thing bigger for whatever reason. By this point I'd pretty much tried everything (everything that I could find out anyway) and no dice - this thing ran rich no matter what.

So yesterday I went to see my friend Brian at Moto Expert in Laval (anyone in the Montreal area that needs any help with their dual sport then he's absolutely the guy to go and see) to go pick up a guaranteed OEM Keihin size 40 pilot jet. While I was there he lent me a fully Dynojetted-out CVK40 carb that he's run on his bored-out (to 685, same config as mine) KLR which had run like a champ. That way I could sling a known-to-run-great carb into my KLR and use it as a benchmark.

Got home, cleaned up his carb complete with the DynoJet internals and 40 pilot jet and whaadya know, bike fired right up, idled beautifully (and waaay quieter than before) and rides like a new bike. I'm not even kidding - Like. A. New. Bike. No more stinky exhaust, beautiful idle, unbelievable difference.

I compared the 40 pilot from his carb to the supposed 40 from mine - the hole in mine looked to be about three times the diameter. No shit is was running rich. Less reamed-out, more like jet sabotage. That explains why the plug would carbon foul after a couple of minutes idling, and why I absolutely never needed to pull the choke. Ever.

So, the plan now is to ride the bike, give it some WOT and give it a good stretch. Then I'll pull Brian's carb - mimic the set up with the DynoJet kit that I bought a year or so ago (and pulled because it made the bike run like utter shit - not surprising given the pilot jet had a hole big enough to drive a bus through) and hopefully be done with it.

Moral of this story folks - never assume the jets are what they say they are on a previously owned bike. I know I won't ever again.

So yeah, a bit more experienced today 8)

Ha, nice find. so the jets I got you yesterday are now a moot point? I'll be mailing them anyway LOL.

They give new meaning to the word moot. Hopefully utterly redundant Mike so I hope you didn't make a special trip on my behalf! But they'll serve as a reminder to me that some battles are hard won (and that thread pitch gauge is going to come in very handy indeed). Tell you what, I'd almost thrown in the towel with this carb but damn I'm glad I finally figured it out.

No worries. I had to go get shoes and brake hardware to fix my Yaris so wasn't a special trip. I forgot the envelope at home today so I will put it in the mail tomorrow

I read that you were having some brake issues - hope you get the Bajaris back on the road soon mate. Thanks for the Houlton run - when I get that thread pitch gauge I can finally once and for all order a damn petcock for the CB build. Thread pitch gauges, man those things are hard to come by.

Damn!. Glad you found it and got that pretty KLR running right.

Jim, I got my pitch gauges in my tap and die set. they are very handy. 70% off at CT. Bajaris is all set except the tires. I need to sell the winter and my CRV wheels to have the $$ for those.

On the way home from a ride, me and my mate were barreling down the highway on our bush pigs and out of nowhere a V Max came into our lives for a split second and then disappeared out of them just as fast.

I think I want a V Max.

With the CB giving me fits and the GL's idle refusing steadfastly to resemble anything normal, I needed a garage win. Long disliked the front brake feel and suspected (and confirmed) a warped brake rotor. Not an easy thing to come by but finally tracked one down in Denmark, ponied over an absurd amount of scratch and made it mine. Waited forever for it to show up, got the thing installed today along with new brake pads front and rear and oh yes, now the thing stops like it should, no more low speed shudder from the front end -
