Lazarus - 1975 Cl360 - STATUS: STOLEN

johnny gaijin

Been Around the Block
so two and a half years ago my 1975 cl360 refused to idle properly. i had cleaned out the carbs and done what little mechanical tinkering i was capable of but it wasn't happening. i took it to mechanic who worked on old bikes (amazingly rare in seattle for some reason) and he did get it to idle... unfortunately that's all it would do. under load it would just roll over puke and die. he spent a couple weeks tinkering with it, points, timing, carb kit, i dunno what all but nothing worked. a friend of a friend is a motorcycle mechanic and he offered to have a look at it. so he picked it up and started tinkering with it. occasionally i'd check in and see how it was going but i didn't want to push him because he was doing it for free. Eventually he gave up and i gave up and i reconciled myself to never riding my bike again.
a couple months ago i bought a running 1975 cb360 for $400 bucks off craigslist. it's only idling on one cylinder but other than that it's in pretty good shape. so i'm at my mechanic buddy's place working on the cb and we compare the carbs with the cl. turns out the frickin' cl is MISSING A JET. the first mechanic did a carb rebuild and totally neglected to put one of the jets back in. so my friend actually makes a new jet for me and bam i rode my cl360 again for the first time in more than two years.
it didn't have a name before so i'm dubbing it lazarus.

plan on changing out the tail light and turn signals, removing the rear fender, cutting down the front fender, removing the gauges, maybe a new headlight, probably a new seat. for starters. i don't know much about bikes, this will be my first build. maybe with the help of my mechanic buddy i can eventually go a little further, tearing the bike apart and painting the frame and such.

it's getting cold out and i don't have a garage to work in so this is probably going to be a slow project but i'm looking forward to it.

anyway, here's lazarus:

Re: Lazarus

Great story man. But at least the guy didn't charge anything to forget that jet! When I first tried tuning my Honda I was pulling jets left and right and a couple of times the main jet wasn't tight enough and actually fell into the float bowl. Oops

Re: Lazarus 1975 Cl360

mine never fell into the bowl but i didn't tighten a jet down once too. much head scratching and then forehead whacking ensued.

Re: Lazarus 1975 Cl360

pretty funny...

same exact thing happened to my neighbors gs450...

one day i said "it seems like its not getting fuel"

i pulled the carb, found the jet sitting in the carb loosely, and put his thirty something years of mechanical knowledge to shame

Re: Lazarus 1975 Cl360

it quit raining in seattle for a couple hours so i did a little work on my bike. took the rear fender off.

can't figure out how to get that cross bar out though. i thought it was just pinched down but maybe it's welded?

also having some trouble with the tail light, i talk about it here:

Re: Lazarus 1975 Cl360

Nice looking bike, I have one just like it. Except I have alot more rust, but
I finalley got the thing to run real good, and now it's time to make it look
good. The weather has been decent here last weekend ,, so I had the CL360
out, I jumped out one the freeway for the first time, I was very impressed
I was crusing at 75-80mph in 5th gear around 7000 rpm and had one more
gear in my back pocket!! ( I just love that 6 speed tranny ).

Re: Lazarus 1975 Cl360

figured out the cross-bar and the tail light started working after some random wiggling... we'll see if it holds up.

So tell about the cross-bar... details, plz.

sure force me to reveal my idiocy :p.

the bolts do pinch down on the cross bar but they also penetrate it. i had loosened the bolts, i just needed to remove them to get it out. doh.

not sure what i'm going to do about it now. i had planned on just cutting the cross bar down and shoving it back in... maybe drilling holes in it won't be a big deal, somebody i know must have a drill press...

Re: Lazarus 1975 Cl360

you could just file the recess, its only part way into tube.

Re: Lazarus 1975 Cl360

it's raining today but i did a little work anyway. got the front fender off, i'm told that riding w/o it screws up handling so i'm planning on cutting it down. can anybody confirm the no fender equals bad handling thing?

the fender is cracked so i'm going to cut it at the crack in front and then an inch or two below the hole on the bottom. running with those cables loose seems like a bad idea so i'm leaving the hole there and i'll throw a zip tie through it around the cables.

Nah, nothing idiotic about that. The turn signals work the same way.

Well, my plan all along has been to do the same thing, remove it, shorten it, and put it back in place. When I read that you were having problems I mentally saw my well-crafted plan going out the window, figuring it was actually welded in place or something. :-[ That's why I asked for details, so I'd have the "secret" when the time came. Glad to know it's not a big deal. Make notches along the side with a round file and a little elbow grease.

I drilled out the rivets that hold the center part to the fender then painted it and put it back into place. It makes a great fork brace and looks fine (IMHO). There might be some twist/flex there w/o it, but as long as the triple tree bolts are tight and the clamps holding the axel at the bottom are also secure it probably would be ok unless you got into some really heavy duty messing around. ::) For my use the "fork brace" I made from the fender works fine... the rest of the fender will be made into a hugger for the back tire mounted to the swing arm and tucked in tight to the tire.

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360

winters at the bicycle shop are real slow so i more or less got paid to work on my motorcycle today.

didn't have the proper tools for chopping up the fender so i took ridesolo's idea and popped the fork brace off of the fender.
took the outside to the wire wheel but i'll need a dremel tool to get the inside.

i also made a license plate/ tail light assembly out of the old tail light clamp, a piece of locker, and some bike rack struts.
it's crooked because nothing's tightened down

looks a little jenky from the back but the front looks good

looking good!

guess im not the only guy who works in a bike shop...

what kinda bicycle do you ride? ;D

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360

flat bar 1X9 masi speciale most of the time.
but between my messenger girlfriend and i we've got:
a bianchi pista
an iro mark v
a surly pacer
a kona major jake
a marinoni track frame i haven't built up yet
and three junker polo bikes

do you play polo at the pit? is that anywhere near brooklyn? my new york geography-fu is weak.

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360

gah! more mechanical trouble.
so when lazarus rose from the dead a couple weeks ago she was backfiring and running on only one cylinder until she warmed up the first couple days but then it seemed to get better. when i started her up it would make some little popping noises until it got warm but it ran pretty well.

then a couple days ago after not riding it for a few days i started the bike up to go to work and again back firing and only running on one cylinder until it warmed up. then after work i rode it home, this time no backfiring and started out on two cylinders but dropped one pretty quickly.

i pulled the spark plugs today and one of them looks nice and tan the other is wet black. so i put in a new spark plug and it's sparking really well. i dialed in the air mixture screw to lean it out a little and took it for a ride and it was mostly running on one cylinder with the other one kicking in once in a while making the bike lurch a lot and doing some backfiring. i pulled the plug again and even with the air mixture screw dialed in the new plug was black and wet again.

tomorrow i'm pulling the carbs on this and my other bike, a '75 CB360. a buddy of mine made some jets for me to replace the missing ones and i'm wondering if they're letting too much gas through or something. i'm gonna take the good parts from both carbs to make one set of super carbs, put them in and see what happens. but if anybody else has some ideas i'd love to hear.

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360

Before you go to the trouble of tearing apart the carbs you might check the points first. Its very easy to do and it is something easy to rule out. For some reason it sounds electrical to me?? Check the terminals on the points and make sure they are tight and not making contact to ground somehow. Check the gap on both and make sure they are operating properly. Leave the points cover off and fire the bike up. I'd try different things before opening up the carbs. It could be something simple.

i know the pit! i havent played polo there yet but ive watched a couple of games. good fun!

sweet collection you have there... right now i have a Langster Pro. Nothing too crazy, cf fork, shimano spd's, generic double wall rims. 46/15 gearing, brakeless, drops (hate flat bars), and a sick cf saddle. next bike will prob be a cannondale six road bike, or possibly a capo frameset.

back to motorcycles ;)

Re: Lazarus - 1975 Cl360

+1 on checking the points. Sounds like it's not sparking at the right time on a cylinder. It's not burning the fuel on one cylinder and it's fouling the plug. That might also explain the sputtering. If you can get your hands on a timing light t will let you really dial it in. Also, and Troy had this problem, the points wires are bad about grounding out on the points cover. Build yourself a nice thick cork gasket and spray the inside of the cover with rubber undercoating. Easy mods to do, and good luck!
