Let me introduce you all to my new two wheeled land barge...

Here she is, in all of her girth and glory. She is the sleeper-cab big-rig of the motorcycling world: The 1984 Honda Goldwing Interstate. This particular bike came with a "Hold my beer and watch me paint this here motorsickle" paint job that is accented by a "I'll put some of these stick-on stripes on this fucker too" stripe job.

If you didn't notice I will now point out for you the dual whip antennas. That's two. Cuz two's better than one. And if you'll look at the photo below you will notice that this bike is actually BIGGER than my wife's Kia Soul.

You'll also notice the heel toe shifter and floorboards, which help to further deflower any notions of cornering in anything but the most sedate manner. Yes sir, this here bike was built in Japan, but I assure you... it is as American as the impulse to install a toilet under your recliner so that you can just poo without worrying about missing any Jersey Shore.
Ahem... If I may use this opportunity to present to you the Gold Accent Paint. Apparently the genius painter decided to paint over some of the more rusted or beatup chrome accesories with gold. It's the little things that really drew me to this bike...

Yes sir, it's the little things.
Here is the trunk, which includes my wife's backrest. As you can see this trunk was once cracked, but has been saved by some hillbillie bodywork magician using, as far as I can tell, a steel strap, two screws, and, I kid you not, silicone. Amazing.

If we continue to the cockpit you will notice that this bike is equipped with an am/fm cassette player. I don't have any cassettes as of yet, but I plan on ordering some Bob Seger, Skid Row, and Eddie Money for starters.

And it even comes with a place for me to keep a cold Keystone Light within arms reach.

So that's what I got. My plan is to ride it as is (minus some maintenance work) until Dolores is done (soon I hope). Then I will do something to this bike. Problem is I don't know what... I could do a dirty but slightly pimpish fully faired tourer on the lines of what Joe did to his brother's Goldwing 1100. Or I could strip the fairing off and do something a little more in character for me... It could never be a single seater, and would always have to have a backrest and comfortable rear seat. This is my 2-up Cruz missile. So all I have figured out is that the heel toe shifter and floorboards have to go, they scrape around every corner and I'm getting tired of it. After that I'm up for suggestions. Also, this is the first time I've ever had bags on a bike. Holy shit is all of that storage handy! I could fit a body in these bags if I cut it up just so....

flat black the fucker, just straight up take some BBQ paint cans and do the whole thing. That looks absurdly comfortable.

Yeah. That fat capitalist pig is extremely comfortable. And it will be flat black with gloss black accenting. Probably spray on Bedliner too...

I guess I'm trying to figure out if I should embrace the Sly in Over The Top vibe that this thing has going on. Or I could do something crazy like try to make it faster and more agile. Or is that just pissing in the wind? Because right now this thing is a couch on wheels that I'm already getting frustrated with. I'm going to switch to gas charged shocks. Right now it's riding on two blown out air shocks in the back. The tires are surprisingly good though. Lots of tread and they do well in the rain. Brakes too. And the motor runs perfectly, but it's never going to set the world on fire.

Like I said Rich, it's the little things.
One issue I'm having already is where to begin the build thread. It will never be a cafe racer due to the required comfortable two up seating and luggage. Nor a tracker or bobber. And there certainly isn't very much that's 'special' about it either.
I have had the thought of finding another, smaller sportier Honda front fairing to put on the front of this bike. Maybe a new tank shroud. But then it's still got an ass end like Precious.

Pssstt... it was built in Marysville, Ohio ;)

I'd lose all the wrought iron trimwork, lose whatever fairing drops below the bottom of the faux tank, trim the windshield down by about half, and lose the topcase (add a small backrest for the missus). It'll look alot sleeker. Just my .02 ;)

Ohio huh? Well that makes more sense than Japan. I don't think they make Japanese people big enough to sling leg over this thing.

Ha, welcome to the club! Yours is a bit bigger and fatter than mine though. I have a backrest that is removable in about 1 min for when I am taking the wife or my son for a ride, when solo I take it off. I would strip off as much of the plastic and cast iron as you can, I would also rip the fairing off and dumpster it, I have a small touring screen that I can slap on for long trips that needs no tools to put on and take off and I find it is pletty of wind protection to ride 6-700 miles in a day @ 80 mph freeway speeds. Then I can take it off for ridng around town and back roads etc. Also a pair of superbike or euro bars make a huge difference in the turns, those ape shape jobbies flex terrible even when the mounts are as tight as you can make them. You can keep it 2-up and comfortable without keeping it in its 80'S ugly glory.

Cheers

Oh yeah, if you haven't already, sign up at ngwclub.com they have the most collection of knowledge on early wings as anywhere, and there is a lot of cool bikes to get ideas and inspiration.

Thanks Joe, I'll love it when it weighs about a hundred pounds less and can go around a corner without scraping!

I say go naked with it. The gl1200 has the faux tank that mates with the fairing, which makes it harder to do... but I think it's worth it. You might be able to fit a tank from an earlier wing on there instead. Or just put something else entirely in it's place. I've always wanted to get a wing and just replace the tank cover with a screen of expanded steel or something equally industrial.

and an absolute must have resource: http://www.randakks.com/TechTips.htm

Ha! You got it! She'll be naked... And I'm pretty good with glass and bondo. So the tank cover won't be a problem.

Take heart. I have seen a worse paint job. My dad bought a burnt orange Goldwing with bright green "flames" (even with the quotations, I use that term loosely) and BRIGHT (neon) yellow dash accents. There is zero chance of his bike ever being missed because of darkness or stolen.

Cafe it anyway but do something novel along the lines of keeping it two up cruiser comfort but cafe in essence, it would be that much more unique!

In my humble opinion, you're going the wrong direction with it. Really, all it needs is American flags and a grill on the back.

aw man , that is priceless- thanks for the laugh !
Could have been worse. I saw a bike with latex brush painted whitewalls :O
