Maritime's new GL - 2UP Distance eater

Another shot

index.php

Hey Maritime, just spotted your GL thread...lovely looking bike ya got there :)

Hope your sort the gremlins....I'm of zero use to you in that dept (most depts haha)

Thanks, This is the one bike I'll never sell and will keep fixing and changing till I can't ride anymore. It got trashed when the deer hit us and both of us are re-built and going again. Hope it never wrecks again though LOL.

Looking beautimus. I found my sensor unplugged slso, but the Harbor Freight large hemostats made short work of that. On Johnny 5 I'm still running lean on #3, so the rack comes off again (only the 2nd time for this rescue!) next week when another rainy period starts. Really don't mind pulling/mounting the carbs, just don't want to scratch paint. Probably masking tape on some areas. I did add SS fishing leaders on each side to keep the shelter sides from flopping down scarring the paint against horn and engine bolts.

Ha, I need a set of those as soon as I can get into a HF again. I just don't have hinges and pull my covers right off and set on a shop rag or soft surface.

So I took last Friday afternoon off to go on a half day ride with 3 buddies. We were booting along enjoying the ride, the ole girl was running great. Showing 2 Chieftens and a 1200 Tiger that she could stick right with them when all of a sudden there was a stumble, then she quit dead. Pretty sure the Dyna just died?? I haven't had time yet to do the full test from Dyna's wedsite but I did confirm 12V was going into it and when you turned over the motor nothing came out of either coil lead so not looking good. Now I need to figure out what to do. The Dyna was great all last season and until Friday was working great. I have no warranty left, and I can't afford $200 to replace it and don't want it to shit the bed again. I have the points so will put them in to at least be able to ride but I want to go back to the better ign if I can. Once I confirm the unit is bad, there is still a small chance another wire may have come lose or shorted someplace, I'll call Dyna and see what the cost to send the unit back for repair might be.

For less than $75 US you can do the Ford TFI mod that I have on the '79. Let me know if interested. You still use points to trigger them, but current flow is negligible and it is a quick swap to go back to straight points if on a '78 or '79.
All parts from Amazon, Vintage Connections, and scrap aluminum.

Yeah that may be an option. I knew you did that one. Let me know what I need to do it and I'll see if I can source the parts.

Edit - do I need the ballast resister? I may have lost it. I was looking for it last night in case I go back to points.

all I know is I got to do something quick as the weather is perfect riding weather and I'n not able to right now

I thought the Dyna still used the ballast, just their own spec. Mine came with one. I'll put the list together again and a link to my write-up. Hopefully you still have your condenser pack as you would need it for emergency bypass of the units. Also the easist install is on a ;78-'79 with that gawd-awful connector clump on the front-right. You just unplug one connector (the one by itself on the side), plug the units in to the two plugs and unplug the condensers. So far so good for me, and I'm using cheap Chinabay TFIs. You can get them at junk yards, too. I understand they were on late 80's - early 90's Econolines and trucks.

Thanks. you don't use resister when you also put dyna coils which I did. And condenser is still in place and ready to re-connect.

Here are the two Amazon parts - actually, you need two each (or ebay if you wish, the ones I bought were ebay before I found them on Amazon and the TFI connectors already were wired.) This is the US site, so I hope you can reach them by the links:

You will also need the male and female 6 prong connector from Vintage Connections (and the M&F pins), Pictures in post #27 on my Freedom build thread. There is no real diagram, but there is a pin-to-pin wiring list in the pdf file.

I used stock cols and don't think I bypassed the resistor. Check the Dyna resistance, you might get by with them without ballast.

Thanks! I'll look this over, I think it's the route I will go and have the points back up should something go south. And I have the connectors in my vintage kit, but I am not sure the bike is still using them. My harness was destroyed in the crash and I re-did a lot of it so may be a little more wiring for me be still doable for sure.

Shit, so far to get these suckers in CAD it's going to be almost as much as a new Dyna. Modules are $45-50 each and connectors are $15, that's $130 right there. Need to hit the junk yard.

Me too. If CRA wasn't raping us for $3k in taxes this year it wouldn't be a huge deal to just drop $200 and get the parts. Hoping local wrecker has some old fords

Shit, don't get me started. Here in Quebec provincial tax is even worse. Had a move to Ontario in our sights, but corona went and put the kibosh on that plan for the foreseeable. Good luck at the wreckers mate

Going to give the owner of the closest wrecker a call. He does business with the company I work for and usually treats me pretty good. It will just depend on what He's got on the hill for me.
