Montreal Manchild with an '81 Honda CB750K

Ah, it seems that in Rhonda's exertions yesterday she may have slightly over done it. Hope I didn't push her too hard, but there is most definitely a rather disconcerting noise coming out from behind the timing cover.

At idle the noise is more of a rattle, but at around 2000rpm there's a rapid ticking sound. I removed the cover to see if there was anything obvious going on but - to my eyes anyway - not so much. Fearing the worst, hoping for the best. It does not sound very healthy.

Any idea on where to start?

Looks like this thread may not be dead quite yet...

Fixed it - there are three steel bolts behind the advancer unit, all three of which had backed out. Once I got the crankcase cover off I could get enough of a 12mm spanner onto them to tighten them up. No more ticking noise.

I believe that’s the three starter clutch bolts. Those back out all the time. If you’re not gonna do the R6 mod then I would suggest using red loctite on them or it’ll keep happening.

hahaha it’s an upgrade to the starter clutch. Here you go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYJSUiXDim8

Ah cool, thanks man for the great vid. Definitely something to consider. Are there any other advantages to the R6 upgrade? Or do you think thread locker on the bolts would do the job?

I'd love to know more about these kind of mods!

The R6 will last a long time, it’s just a better design. The original starter clutches weren’t great the bearings fail. You’ll know when it goes. The red loctite should last at least as long time. Just make sure you clean the oil off really well.

There’s a relay mod to charge the coils faster, there’s a shifting mod because from the factory the bike sometimes doesn’t want to downshift properly. Um, there’s a clutch mod to make it smoother. So much you can do if you have the money.

This is nice to see a bike rebuilt and given a paint job, bit it's sad to see there weren't any period-correct UPGRADES done with it!

-Sigh.

Sorry you're sad Sigh, sorry you're sad, hope this'll cheer you up a tad -
Be happy my ass is near her paint, and be glad your sad ass ain't!

And that's the triple truth, Ruth ;)

(and also why my next bike build is a KLR650. I actively look for potholes on this thing!)

i popped a tire on my motor home on one of those pot holes on hyw20 thru downtown Montreal and none of those people even slowed down ot get around me

or cared

The only time someone would care enough to stop would be if you had pissed them off or inconvenienced them in some way.

I have found Montreal drivers to be the fastest in Canada, Toronto having the second fastest.
