My Honda CB360 Cafe Build

__Z__

Been Around the Block
Alright, so picked up this CB360 last weekend.

No title, no key, was told it ran a year and a half ago. I ordered a kick start lever to see if I can get it to turn over fairly easy or not.

Working out the title issue, and plan to covert it to a kick start with a new ignition, so no worries there.

Here was day 1 of work lol.

Picked up the 350, and it was time to do some stripping and part swapping..

Im swapping the 350 motor and plate to the 360 frame, should make for a gnarly combo. Also went with the 350 tank to keep the bike smaller.

The rest of the 350 stuff is up for sale, including the cafe tail.

thats is going to be a cool project but you need more vertical tire clearance you are about 2" short depending of course on what shocks you use

After this weekend, I will no longer be running a "loop", the seat pan will be welded onto the frame as a cross brace, I have ordered 1" steel balls to fill in the back of the frame, I will weld them in and round everything off with a grinder.

Removing the loop gives me around another 1" of clearance, I also plan to run a taller shock.

I will also be starting on new motor mounts for the 350 scrambler motor. If all goes well, I will be taking the frame and media blasting it at a friends shop NEXT weekend. From there it will be headed to get cover with linex.

you should wait and make sure the shocks clear at full bump
if you are using longer shocks you can also raise the cs sprocket a bit, this also will lessen the amount of chain slack at full droop
all this needs to be done in concert to get it right ;)

oh and get the cs sprocket as close as you possibly can to the pivot this will make chain slack variations during suspension travel be at the minimum possible

I test fit he motor over the weekend, its ALMOST identical to the 360 motor, but not quite, Im crossing my fingers Ill be able to reuse the stock rear lower mount (as itll allow for designing the rest of the mounts with less guess work). We will have to see.

just remember with 1'' longer shocks the steering may be twitchy and you may have more slack in the chain at full droop it will likely rub on the swingarm at the top front
and with 1" longer shocks you will want to keep the front at stock height for sure don't drop it down any
cs sprocket height in relation to the swingarm pivot is really critical
all these things need to be considered to get it right
mocking up the frame and having the shocks that you will be using in the end
take off the springs and attach the chain move the wheel through fulll travel and take note of what all is happening
just because the engine is almost identical does not mean the cs sprocket height is

Progress has been slow the last week and a half. I think Im going to ditch my tail design, as the wife would like me to keep it a 2 person bike and the tail just seems too short, and if i made it longer, it would just look wrong with the proportions of the bike. Ill post up a sketch of what Im thinking now later today.

I also found a big dent in the front frame tube brace I am going to have to cut our and reweld.

I picked a color, its my panels and tank are going to be pearl white, my dad had 1qt left over from painting his 300zx, considering its $1000 a qt and hes letting me use it for free I couldnt turn him down lol.

So I placed a few orders.

A flat tail loop (no angle)
A harley night rod bikini headlight fairing
A pack of 5 inline fuses
Lastly a signal/light/horn control module

Look forward to progress pictures this weekend. I plan to have the majority of the welding done this weekend, all that will be left is burning in new motor mounts for the 350 motor on the 360 frame.

Quick sketch of how the bike should look when its done.

You can see my new tail design, the rear cowl will be removable so the wife can ride with me when she wants (which will be next to never).

Re-sketched and completed the design ideas I had on a 24x36 sheet. Im going to need to go through and darken up some of the lines when I get back home from work.

Friend of mine convinced me on a new removable subframe design.

Started hand fabbing the brackets I would need for the clevises. I do not own a table grinder, a plasma, or a table vice, so this took some time as they are all 1/4" steel and all I had was a hand grinder/cutter.

Sunday

Time to put in all those hours of cutting and grinding.

I had planned to have EVERYTHING mocked up and tacked on, however that didnt go as planned, I seem to have broken 2 drill bits in the process, so Ill have to finish the other half of tacking over the week.

Top mount/cross brace.

Lookin pretty good! I understand the pain that is doing everything with an angle grinder.
