Need Machinist's Opinion on Steering Neck Bearing Cup

Barnburner

Coast to Coast
I am working on an old Aermacchi/HD two stroke that uses the following ball bearing cup/race slip fit into the top and bottom of the frame's steering neck.

I would like to swap out the front end on the bike for a super clean CB160 front end that I got for very cheap. This gives me a very similar look to stock but with Honda-level availability for replacements plus an 18" wheel with a nice 180mm brake (stock was 17" wheel with 120 mm brake). Amazingly, the steering stem is the same diameter and very close to the same length (a spacer may be needed but I'm not worried about that now).

My issue is that the CB160 uses a larger diameter race that fits in a cup that welded to the neck. So, I can't just go buy a CB160 cup. I also don't think I can turn down a race to fit. Finally, I've come to find out that you can't exactly make a custom bearing race easily because of the need to grind it.

My proposed solution is to have new cups turned with one end the correct diameter to slip fit into the Aermacchi neck, and the other end wide enough to press fit the tapered race pictured below from an All Balls tapered steering bearing kit for the CB160.

To summarize - the tapered bearing would ride in the tapered race that would be press fit into the custom turned cup that is slip fit into the neck.

I'd appreciate a machinist's opinion on whether this should work. If you'd be able to make it for me for a fair price I'd be happy to hire you. My apologies in advance for your time if I'm missing something obvious here and it won't work. Here's a hot chick next to one of Roland Sand's trackers to make up for it.

It'll work just fine. The pressure from the stem being tightened will keep the bosses from turning or moving, so long as they're a good snug fit. But they need to fit tightly. Metal to metal or maybe even .001" press fit. Otherwise, they "could" possibly come loose later on (I doubt it, but better safe than sorry). So long as there is enough wall thickness between the outside of the bearing race and the inner part of the neck, there's no reason your solution won't work. There's quite a few people on here that are machinists and/or have their own lathes that can turn a couple out if you can get some very accurate measurements.

Get some measurements on the bearings, stem, small and large inner diameter of the neck, etc. Basically everything that is going in there. Post it in here and if nobody else bites within a couple days I'll make them for you.

Where are you located? Someone else might be tempted to help if they live nearby and don't have to ship them out, or ship them very far anyway.

Thanks for the response Jewbacca. I'll get out the digital calipers and get some precise measurements. If no one else wants to help I'd love to take you up on your offer. I'm in NE Ohio btw.

If the stem is the same diameter, why not use the bearings/cup/race on the bike?

Just to be clear, are you suggesting removing the races (HD calls them steering "cones") from the stock stem and fitting them onto the CB stem? That may actually work and for the life of me I'm not sure why I didn't think of that. I kind of skipped over the idea of using stock races once I saw the CB races were too wide for the stock cups. Thanks for the idea - I'll report back if it will work.

Indeed I am. If the ID is the same, no reason they wouldn't work.

I'm trying to figure out if you have an issue. Say that again?

It worked for Harley so I see no reason a bike 1/10th the weight should have any problems ;)

No kidding - it weighs 187 lbs wet. Should be even lighter after I'm done with it.
