New here from California

Hello Forum, I'm new here and looking to buy my first bike early next year.

I've got two questions for you guys:

1. I found a few local listings for a guy selling a couple of sohc CB750s, no running engines in either of them for a pretty low price. Is it hard to come by a replacement sohc engine?

2. What's your opinion of building something from a recycler?? There are several within driving distance, one of whom seems to have a number of the late 70s/early 80s japanese bikes.

My plan in either case is to try and put together a fun city bike for running around town and back/forth to school.

If your goal is to be riding, get a rideable bike. I made the mistake of getting a project thinking I'd throw together something fun to go to high school and back on... long story short I never rode it to school and it still isn't quite there. As far as looking for bikes, comb CL, be patient, and don't be afraid to contact people asking questions when something looks good.
Where in California are you btw?
Oh, and welcome!! ;D

Ahh alright. Being in a big city should help with finding bikes to buy. Down on the Central Coast its slim pickings for anything cheap and decent ::)

yeah I'd say start with a running bike. if you do opt for a project to ride in the near future.. make sure the bike is complete and spend your fubds getting running first before you spend it all on "upgrades" and cosmetic stuff . a lot of people seem to fall victim to that. down in socal I see sohc engines pop up here and there. really though if the engine isn't frozen and everything is complete from airbox to exhaust, it shouldn't take much to get running.

HA. You're telling someone to be patient, oh the irony. But CALfe is right, I bought a very questionable bike for my first bike and ended up selling it cause I was broke and didn't really have the time to work on it. Just bought my second bike and the patience paid off and I couldn't be happier ;D

Ok thanks for the input guys.

While we're discussing buying bikes, do you guys happen to know if anyones done a cafe style bike out of the post 83' viragos?? (dual shock)My buddy knows a guy with two of them at his impound yard. They may or may not be in running condition, but obviously not gonna try if its a big waste of time.

I doubt it, but google is your friend. You'd have to do some serious work trying to get anything close to a straight line from tank to tail on that, since the frame is dropped to be cruiser style. But, with enough fab and proper design work you could make it work. I think the appeal in the monoshock viragos is that you can simply take off the cruiser style subframe and make something more fitting to the cafe style without suspension alterations.
