Been Around the Block
Hey all..
Just stumbled upon this site recently, and I love it! What a wealth of information.
Last winter, I picked up a 1981 CM400e for little or nothing... Stuck about 50 bucks into it and beat the hell out of it all summer.
I needed to do a head gasket replacement, and started searching the internet for parts, and started seeing all these pics of Cafe Racers. It was love at first sight!
So I've decided to build one of my own. I know my bike isn't exactly the perfect media for this project, but it's what I've got to work with.
Starting with a complete top end rebuild, port and polish the head, K&N filter pods, MAC 2 into 1 exhaust, Clubman bars, and some weight reduction. Will post pics as soon as I can. I'm looking forward to any ideas you guys may have.
I wanna do this right, but yet I'm feeding 5 mouths on one income, so it also needs to be economical... Any thoughts?

I would love to do what you're doing to a CM400. I think they are great bikes. You'a looks like a darn good example that doesn't really need much elbow grease.
Start a thread so I can live vicariously.

Ok... Maybe this makes me sound like a dumbass, but I'm a machinist, not a computer tech... What's the difference between a thread and what I've been doing? :-[

LOL :D this is a thread. maybe he means one in the big projects section. nice bike; it looks very similar to my '78 cb400t before I started. I'm in Milwaukee and there are 2 other members in the area that I know of: brewtown16 an milwaukeephil. where are you?

Good lookin' scoot!
Thanks Busa...
I've got alot of plans for it, and I think I finally got the Wifey on board.... ;)
I've also got a '79 CM185 twinstar... That was going to be my original cafe project, but I decided to go with the bigger bike.
The little one needs alot more work but since it only cost me 75 bucks i figured i could work out some issues on it.....

Sweet. I know where watertown is. the small bike is just begging to be cafed for your wife. you don't want her on the back of your's slowing you down now do you?

Yeah... That's why I bought it... Figured it was something she could learn to ride on and not mess mine up!! LOL!!

Welcome to the 400 club. I have a CM400T 1981, only the motor tanked and it is getting a replacement from a 82 CB450 Hawk. Lost the right cylinder to low oil pressure while on the highway and before I could shut it down it crapped. Chunks of metal everywhere inside. Your MAC exhaust, do you have it already? I scored one with my 450 parts bike but there is brackets missing from the pipes where is connects to the head. I have been trying to find out what they look like as I have 3 big boxes of parts that came with the bike, any chance of a pic? Good luck, these bikes are super easy to work on, the motor can be out and apart in no time. Just make sure you check the oil channels I know 3 other people who lost the right cylinder on these twins.

Cheers,

Mike

Nah... Haven't bought it yet... I think I found it in the dennis kirk catalog, if I remember right.... I might be able to help you out with parts on you're bike tho... My pops has the same bike as a parts bike... I'm stealing the comstars, forks and disk break setup off from in for nothing but my oem handlebars... talk about a deal!
I had the same thing happen to my motor, but it seams to be ok... Damn head gasket was all dry rotted from sitting in a barn for so many years... Gave me an excuse to start tearing it apart and fixin her up tho!

Yeah- I was thinking in the "Projects" Dept- but if this is working, what do I care?
I just want to watch. I REALLY like those bikes. (For some reason, I got a Royal Enfield instead. My curiosity got the better of me) (OK- and I missed having a thumper)
