New project begins CL360

Been Around the Block
A buddy of mine went back to England and won't be returning so I inherited a few bikes from him. A kawasaki kd175 enduro 2stroke titled and fully street ready and a project cl360 in pretty clean condition. I'll just ride the kd175 for now since its a first kick lightweight bike that works well in my small town.. The cl360 has pushed my gt750 off the lift while I wait for machining work and build the engine.

I have not spent time with the bike yet to figure out what direction I will go with it, but probably do a basic clean cafe racer. Maybe some GP bike influence but I will keep it much simpler than my cr500 bobber build.

Ideas? Caveat that I might not agree with your ideas, but I still appreciate them.

It was bitter sweet night in my shop tonight. After the holidays I finally got some time to go back to my shop and the first thing I did was pack away the gt750 engine while I wait for machined parts. Then I started going through the bins I got this weekend and found everything I need for the cl360 top end. All is well below the head and bike is fantastically clean.

But as I flipped the bars around and used handlebars as foot pegs I realized that the high mount exhaust that makes the cl360 look awesome really sucks at making it a small tidy bike. I need to research a few options but I think I might sell the exhaust. It's a bummer, but I just can't see a way that it's practical as i would like to build this bike for a small person. Luckily it's a desirable pipe and is is great condition.

Really leaning towards a 60's race bike at The moment. Subject to change.. But I'm definitely not putting the bonnet headlight back on.

With awesome high pipes

Without leg burning pipes.

me too. As long as the handle bars either get pushed back up to position or replaced. And, that seat doesnt remain in too many more pics.

Neither will remain. Promise.
Not sure what will go In its place but that seat was more comfy than the frame rails

there a big thing if your doing up a VMX bike like pre 78' racing/Vinduro's bike. i would love it but alittle far away

Yeah Australia is a pretty long airplane ride for a headlight. I can see its appeal on the right bike, but this ain't that bike.

Exactly. My buddy put it on there since it was a cool piece, but I'm taking to bike in a different direction.

Leaning towards this at the moment but I might entertain some scrambler designs if I decide to keep the pipes.

Looks like you wouldn't ever have to worry about cold feet on that thing!

Ha!! Yeah I can name about 20 other things on that bike I won't be doing, especially those clubman bars. But it's a similar motor frame combo imitating a similar vintage of GP race bike I have in mind. I am still searching for other inspiration for things this bike wants to be, but GP bike is the best so far. I will probably set it up to look totally natural as a naked bike but then try my hand at making some simple aluminum fairings.

Theres really nothing wrong w clubmsns as long as they fit the bike and most importantly, fit you.
The pair I tossed in the dumpster, werent at comfy angles at all. They were miserable bars me.

Also, the rear shocks on that bike are terrible. They are the same as the ones I just threw in the dumpster, yesterday. They are made for a much heavier bike. and ride like a chuck wagon.
With those shocks that thing IS a hard tail.

The only things they got is, they are nice looking and they are cheap.
BTW clubmans are cheap too.

And I dont where all these guys are finding ASBESTOS TOED BOOTS !

Yeah clubman bars are a proven success for sure, I'm just not a fan. I'll be doing clipons if I go that route. There is a chance I might do a tracker or dual sport look just to keep the exhaust, I just can't see a seating position that won't require snuggling with a muffler.

Probably don't need them, you have an idea how much power is lost with short exhaust and unmodified stock carbs ::)

I made a pair of S/S heat shields for my high pipes.

The one time I checked w the thermometer, I rode it, 70mph 12miles to Bromz house. The pipes were approx 350F nearest the shields. The face of the shields under my legs measured 100F.

They work.

Pretty boring night in the shop. I spent a few hours cleaning gasket surfaces and found a stuck piston ring. But I did decide to get rid of the really sweet looking pipes, and build a vintage GP bike.

I narrowed in on my inspiration. Obviously not gonna do a replica, but I'm gonna loosely base it on an 1965 Honda mc148 125cc GP bike. I don't think I will be able to find a gas tank from a 50 year old race bike so I'll see what I can do to build one like it. I'll make it fairing optional.
