No title bike help

Coast to Coast
So I've got a line on a nice CB175. The catch is that there is no title on the bike. The guy said his grandparents owned it and they're dead and they can't find it. I have a few questions.

1) Is it possible to get a copy of the title from the DMV?
2) If I get a notarized bill of sale, how hard is it to get a title that way?
3) With a notarized bill of sale will I be able to at least get plates for the bike so it can be ridden legally?

He can get a title. Depends on the state but he should be able to send a death cert to the DMV and some other paperwork (the DMV will explain the details) and get a duplicate title.

I'll second that.
Have the guy who sold it to you get a title. It will be a huge headache for you, but shouldn't be too bad for him.

I guess his uncle is the executor of the estate of his grandparents. He's in Germany now. I told him to have his uncle call the DMV and they can tell him what to do. Not sure if this is something that can be handled over the phone or through the mail. Sucks that this is such a headache and I fear that I probably won't be able to buy it.

It can be done through the mail.
It takes a while though, so it may get sold out from under you in the meantime to someone who hasn't a clue about title issues.

I guess it's worth the risk. If someone unknowingly buy it, then that's their fault and their misfortune. I lose nothing in the deal other than having to keep looking for a CB175.

If it's a good enough deal and you like the bike buy it. Worst case you need to get a titled CB175 frame and transfer parts (or what some might do is transfer the VIN plate and destroy the donor frame).

That might not be a bad idea

What state are you in? Out here in Arizona you have an inspection done on the bike by the DMV, get a bond from your insurance agent ($50) and you will get a bonded title for 12 months. After the 12 months you title it in your name.

I'm in the same boat on a bike that I bought with just the bill of sale. I didn't know anything at the time, and the gent that sold me the bike said that in the state of Georgia you only need the bill of sale. (wrong) Looking for a solution! Any ideas?

I'm in Ohio.

So the guy called the title bureau and apparently there was never a title issued on the bike. Anyone have any idea what the next step might be?

I am in the process of getting a title for a free bike I picked up here in DE. I had to go to the local JP court and fill out a packet, and take my bike frame to the police lane at the DMV(they are only there once a month) to have them check the serial number. Then I have to take the packet I filled out, and the paperwork I got from the police into the DMV and hopefully I should be able to get issued a title.

Have you asked the DMV about a bonded title?

You do not have to be a resident of Vermont to register vehicles there. I did not get a tittle with my bike, nor did two of my friends. We sent a bill of sale and the proper forms to the Vermont DMV, and got plates and registration in the mail. I followed the steps here: http://benboyle.com/blog/

PM me if you have questions

Sounds like it might work. So you didn't need a Vermont mailing address for this to work?

Wow if that works you just revolutionized the bike buying business.
Someone confirm please

that link rules, but vermont doesn't issue titles to motorcycles less than 300cc.....so if i did this i would hope i got a registration and hope that florida will accept that?

Sounds to good to be true but I filled out the form and a check and dropped it in the mail. We shall see. I used my address as the buyers and a buddy of mine as the sellers address both Washington address'. Filled out a Vermont DMV bill of sale. If this works I will be so surprised and STOKED.

Just to confirm, you do not need a Vermont mailing address. I know you get a registration, and a plate with inspection sticker. Not sure how the titling process in Florida works, but I would hope that if you brought in the registration in your name, you should be able to get a title at the DMV.
