Not a normal choice for a café

Just read randakks points timing guide and kinda confused me but I guess I probably can make it worse

Was that the split timing method? It has a summery page that helps make sense of it. NGW has a good timing write up too. Basically hook the light to one set. Turn engine over and make sure light comes on and goes out in the right place, repeat for other side. If the light never comes on the points have a problem in the wiring or they are bad.

Get the CB450 points if you can, they are a little better as they have a second copper spring strap that makes them a performance upgrade.

So I jave a dyna 3 ignition box if I also buy the piece that replaces the points do you think that would be easier to deal with ?

You dont need the box. Just the dyna sensors. Id reccomend dyna coils too as you then bypass the resistor and remove a bunch of wires

Box is for a different style ignition. The dhna for the GL1000 is just a magnet and 2 pickups that replace the points. I got mine off amazon.ca as a package of the ign and the coils and new plug wires and NGK caps. It really woke the bike up. It then shit the bed but I had a wire short out so I think that was why. I got a new dyna and fixed the bad wire and knock on wood it did 90MPH steady for 2 hours yesterday to get home.

yes, if all the wires to and from those to the coils are all good you should get a big fat spark, it has to be timed the same as points with the light as well, but unlike points once you set the dyna, you never have to do it again. Points are needed to be adjusted, cleaned, and re-timed every 10K or so. One thing, don't use the stupid scotch lock for your 12V to the Dyna, wire that with a proper bullet.

And Octane on NGW has a great Dyna install thread with pics and step by step install instructions.

The OLD Dyna system had pIckups and a box. With the new ones, all the electronics are in the pickup unit. Many of the early ones failed already. If you stay with points, get new condensers or you'll burn up the new points fast. As far as sparking, the points spark a little, but if the spark a lot it indicates the condensers aren't working (could be just bad connection or ground). Also, the have to be gapped properly so they open and close. Then you time them.

Is this a fair deal ?

Yep that's the pack I got. You'll just need plug caps if your's are old, you may be able to re-use those though. I got it on sale on Amazon but was only maybe $20 less.
