Nuts and Bolts

Been Around the Block
I know there has been a few comments over time about snapping Ace bolts around the bike. I was wondering if we could get a list here of which bolts were an issue for everyone/which bolts people would like replacements for?

Through work I have access to a nut and bolt supplier with a fantastic range of sizes and types and I would be happy to check availability/price up sets of bolts for different parts of the Ace, or even complete replacement kits if people desired.

That's a good idea as a few people have being having trouble. I don't need any myself as I to work in the M/C trade, but I'm sure you will get plenty of interest.

I've been replacing virtually everything as I go along, just in case!

A couple of tricky ones - the top shock dome nuts (mine were starting to rust when I picked it up from the dealer) and the muffler bracket bolt are both metric fine pitch.

Great idea. 8)

Perhaps a 2 pack solution?

Pack 1 - Essentials - that tend to get used/seize/break regularly or are critical safety ones
Pack 2 - The rest

And a wee sheet with them stating any key torque wrench settings?

I would go for this for sure, and think lots of new owners would. A great way to work your way around a new bike too and would make the riding experience feel more secure. ;D

Yep, I would like to replace all engine bolts with stainless allen sockets
I worry every time I turn a chinese nut!
Rather than replace them add hock, it would be awesome to have replacement list
to take to stainless shop!

Replaced all the engine bolts with Stainless steel cap head bolts A2 & A4) within the last couple of weeks, so sizes are still fresh in my mind:

L/H& R/H engine cases: Approx 18 x M6 x 40 with a couple of M6 x 50
L/H & R/H clutch cap / skyteam engine plate: - 8 x M6 x 10
Chain guard: 2 x M6 x 10
Seat hump: 2 x M6 x 16
Handlebars: 4 x M6 x 16
Rocker Cover bolts: 3 x M6 x 20 (from memory)
Starter motor: 3 x M6 x 16

Looks much better and safe in the knowledge that they won't corrode or snap in a hurry!

Thumbs up !! I was actually thinking doing the bolt list after I change all mine.... Now I have got it !! :D

Don't forget to use anti-seize grease with the stainless steel!

And, because of the anti-seize, reduce torque settings by about 20%.

I use a copper/clay based grease; it prevents the stainless trick of electrolytically welding itself to aluminium.

Bearing grease doesn't hack it!

Great to see a bit of feedback for this. I'll be completely stripping a 125cc Ace in the next couple of weeks so will make a list of all bolts, shank sizes, and their locations so that I can make up a full list and talk to my supplier.

That will be ace! Are you stripping it to paint the frame? Or custom rebuild?

Don't want to give too much away on this project for a few more weeks 2b, but I can say it will be completely stripped and will be a very different looking creation when done. Custom parts based on those on my Ace 50cc are coming along nicely, I should have the tank straps and rear guard brackets ready to order by the end of April, with a revised version of the seat in May.

Torque Wrench Settings ex Factory

I asked nicely and this is a sheet that the factory have provided for us to post on the forum. I think it is their quality control sheet for tightness for all bikes that leave the factory, as there are different bolts listed for each area. I see there are no engine bolt figures, guess they rely on the engine manufacturer to have that right.

Sorry Josephau, nothing about the spokes.

Are these values already included in the manual that comes with the bike?

And remember what Stroker Crazy posted earlier in this topic...

Very enterprising 2b!

A very useful addition to our collection of 'Ace' data.

The 'Operation Instruction' booklet manages to avoid mentioning any torque settings.

OK, here are the torque settings for engine bolts, again from my contact at the factory...

Lots for the 50cc, a good list of the bolt sizes too.

Only limited details available for the 125cc. If we want some settings for any of the other key 125 engine bolts, post specifics here and and I will ask.
