Oil levels - oil window vs manual

sham

Been Around the Block
Hey guys,

So here's the deal - I overfilled the engine oil to get the bike started about 2 weeks ago, mainly because it was making a hell of a noise and there was no oil showing in the oil window even though I had filled in the specified 1.4L as per the manual.

My spark plug has been fouling badly, and the bike has been stalling after being revved, though it does go and has power to the wheels. Trying to get to the bottom of the plug fouling, I realized it could be the high levels of engine oil, as I was also getting white smoke from the pod filter when it stalled.

Here are some pics of the spark plug and the oil leakage coming through.

New spark plug after running the bike in neutral after less than 5 minutes.

Knowing I overfilled about 3L, I drained 2 just then, measuring by filling up a 2L milk carton. While I could see that the oil was much higher than the required levels before filling, shown by the oil window, I now cannot get any oil to come through to the window, no matter how upright or sideways I put the bike.

Question is - what should I trust? My maths or the window? Are there other methods of checking, and is it possible that even if I still have 1.4L or more in there, the engine needs more and hence the oil is not flowing through?

Thanks.

Ha I should rephrase - should one go judge whether the bike has enough oil or not by by the oil gauge/window, or by the amount specified in the manual.

Eg. If no oil enters the oil window after pouring the specified amount of oil into the engine, should I continue pouring until oil appears and reaches the correct levels via the viewer, or is it ok to leave it?

So if my maths is right, you're saying you put 4.4l in a bike that should only have 1.4?

That's not good......

As for your window, maybe it's covered in crap (on the inside) and you just can't see the level?

By the way - what bike is it??

Hi Hillsy,

Its a kawa z250. I decided to drain the rest of the oil and try again, basing it off the oil gauge. This time it about the right amount and was happy.

Meh?

Lol thanks for the reply anyways.
