Re: Out in a field Build ... The Sock Monkey

Small update on the front brake set up . Got a few things worked out with the machinist and looks like should be done soon. Also going to have back of the caliper shaved down about 1/8 to make sure theres more then enough room from the mags. Will get pics up as soon as i get the parts in my hands !!

Re: Out in a field Build ... The Sock Monkey

All i can say is its a good start as im one step closer to getting front brake done . Spacer is done just needs polished and caliper, disk need painted . Also had a 1/8 milled off the back off the caliper to add lil more space . Next need to get the caliper mount bolted up and then measure where the caliper will be centered . Then have the mount finished . Here are the parts....

Believe it or not but the guy is way cool .Wed when i took off work to work on the bikes he called me and want to see and measure the parts he was sitting in my drive way lol He took the caliper, disk and measurments and said he would get back to me . So last night he showed up at my shop with parts in hand . He is a bike nut like us and has a few including a Yam 90cc twin smoker in perfect shape. Everytime i offer to pay him for something he tells me no its all good i like doing this shit lol So when the job is done hes getting a bottle of what ever he wants ;D

Brad when you did your front caliper set up did you make the caliper mount first then get the cailper centered ? Or which order did you fit stuff ?

Re: Out in a field Build ... The Sock Monkey

I pushed the rotor as close to the fork leg as i could and then made the caliper fit and clear the spokes but with mags you can skip that pain in the ass part

Just thought I would let you know that your thread is responsible for nothing getting accomplished at work today. Awesome build. A very good example of what can be accomplished and brought back to life

Truly a magnificent build. I'm working on a XS 500 as well, but that is where any comparison would have to end. Awe inspiring.

Re: Out in a field Build ... The Sock Monkey

WOW, I haven't been on here in a while and missed a lot on this build. All I can say is it has turned out amazing. I will definately reference your work if I ever get around to doing anything to my 400. Great work!

When I get discourage ed with my build, I like to look at this and see what can be done with a bike so much further gone than mine. Very inspirational, hope the New Year is good to you and your build.

Re: Out in a field Build ... The Sock Monkey

Not much to up date just doing few small things that need done as im saving up for brake lines. So i needed to find or build a rear brake arm as using a RD400 swinger and fzr brake set up . I looked at the one off my FJ but to short and looked at other ones that just didnt fit. Made a few up but just didnt trust them or they didnt go well with the over all look of the bike . So after looking and think said F it ill build one and took a SS bar and started triming came out good im thinking and should do the job . If anyone sees a problem please let me know or if they can think of a better way would be cool ....

Re: Out in a field Build ... The Sock Monkey

Does that take weight off the bike using the bar stock instead of the tube style original or just and aesthetic thing? How is the side to side flex on that when it is attached? Only point of the tube style would be rigidity I would think. Just curious.

To tell you the truth I have no idea lol the stock one off the bike is a thinner bar out of steel . The SS bar is lil thicker then stock and its what I had laying around the shop . And more I mess with it the more I'm not liking it . As for flex there is some and just doesn't sit well with me but as of tonight will have heat out in the shop and over the weekend found some round stock with a few other parts I think I can make a round bar stay ! Going to model it after the one on my FJ and see how that works out !!!
Thanks for bring it up as it got me thinking what's wrong with the one I have !!!!
