Painting My Tank Questions

That's the same paint I used for the gold on my MB5, worked out great. Was the only gold I could find in a spray can that appealed to me. A lot of the others were either fairly harsh looking or really dull gold.
Yes exactly. I had some high temp gold that I really liked but didn't want to use that on the tank. I was trying to match the gold to my rims.

D'oh! I forgot, I used pinstripe tape on my trackbike. Didn't bother clearing it though. The only issue I had was the tap shrunk a little and one fo the corners revealed some white on the wrong side. No biggie, I cut out the shrunk section and put new stuff over it. Overlapped the ends, no one notices anyway.

So yeah, I guess on a track bike I can safely say I'd just lay down some pinstriping tape and call it good.
I want that Aprillia, awesome bike:)

So next question, should I sand the gold at all before I do the black. If so, wet or dry sand and what grade?

A light wet sand for toothe and to kill any orange peel might be ok but some metallics dont like sanding

I got the black on today and it is partly ok and partly not! I have had good luck with rattle can paint before getting a smooth glass like finish but this finish has orange peel like I've not experienced before. The good news is the lines came out nice and even with a crisp edge. I did 1/4" lines but it probably would have been better with 3/16" but it's not a big deal. I have gold BSA decals to place on both sides before clearcoat.

If the black is not metallic you can wet-sand it to smooth out the bumps prior to clear coating. I wet-sand after every stage with mine.

Really liking it so far, nice work.

Thanks. It is not metallic. What is the procedure for wet sanding, I've never done it before. I only put two light coats of black on then one heavy coat. I didn't want to get to much build up arounf the tape.

Ok so just asking a question which might be stupid but here goes. Could I clearcoat over the black as it is with the orange peel and then sand the clear to get a smooth finish or will the orange peel still show through? I ask this because it will be difficult to sand the black without sanding the gold stripe also.

You can. Sometimes, the orange peel will still be visually prevalent through the clear, but that is usually with metallic. You'll get a nice smooth outer surface, if you wet sand and polish though. Good chance a black won't give you too much reflective variation, so should show just what the clear is on the outside,. I hope this all makes sense.

Ok, I couldn't stand it so I sanded with 600. Now ready to be re sprayed with black. I'm going for a different black this time, going to use the same kind as the gold as it sprayed really nice.

Attempt number two, not perfect but much better. Let it cure for a few days put decals on then shoot with the 2k clear.

Ready for clear. Got some finger prints on the paint when I was applying the decals, what should I clean them off with prior to clear coat?

Whatever you use, you should test in the tunnel first. I would suggest dish washing soap and distilled water followed by distilled water rinse first. Use a micro fiber for wiping. Extra caution around decal edges. Stubborn prints, try isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber towel.
