NICE! Do you got 3 phase in your shop? We were JUST talking at work about how to use a 3 phase 3 or 5hp motor to make a single to 3 phase coverter / generator.
http://www.metalwebnews.com/howto/ph-conv/ph-conv.html

Provide power on two legs with single phase 220 then close the contact (manual disconnect) and the spinning motor creates the third leg... and if you manually start the motor spinning, say with a pull rope around the shaft, you can even do away with relays "1R-1,2" , "2R-1" and the Motor Start Capacitor... Just spin the motor manually and then close the switch.

Nope no three phase
I have a rotary converter which is almost exactly what you have come up with there.
I will eventually have three phase run to my shop but the coat is so high i cant afford it at the moment.

That was two purchases ago! Haha

Purrs like a kitten. (A loud one) okay maybe more like it purrs like a tiger or a mountain lion.

Just needs a good cleaning. By it runs my soda blaster at a constant 90 psi without even turning on for 10 minutes haha. And runs the shaders without flinching.
So far I'm happy with the purchase!
300 well spent.

What gauge is it? I'm going to be making my own as well, just wondering how thick it should be.

It's 1mm, Zincanneal which I think is about 20g. I've found 1mm - 1.5mm fine for this sort of work.
