Have heard that ex-Harley engineers said the engine they started with in these was an absolute masterpiece, but they were forced to add gobs of weight and bling, among other tuning and performance changes, to make it “feel” like a Harley. Makes a guy wonder what could’ve been…

If you believe Erik Buell, he designed the engine that turned into this one in the 90's, and Harley shelved it, until they wanted to try to convert some of the sport bike guys. Sent it to Porsche to sort out the liquid cooling. Even still, north of 100HP, decent handles for a big bike. It certainly is a good bit more lively than the Softail Night Train in the back of the shop, and it's comfortable.

I bought a set of empty crankcases to verify that an air-cooled ATC250R engine is a suitable swap into a Benelli 2C frame. I also picked up a Virago 5-spoke wheel because I've always wanted to do a bike with matching 19" front and rear wheels. The only downside is the lack of a cush drive.

I won't be getting around to this anytime soon; there are three half-built bikes in line ahead of it. Just slowly adding to my parts cache whenever I find a bargain.

Since I'll never own an original "1HX" Yamaha FZ250, I figured I could at least get a small piece of one. So I ordered this, and it arrived this morning. I have a collection of other pistons I keep on a shelf in my cubicle at work, and this will be a great addition. I should have put a dime in the photo for scale; it's remarkably tiny for a 4-valve chamber.

Hard to imagine 4 valves whizzing away at some insane RPM in that space.

I don't recall why, but we had the frame from one of these sitting around at work. I went to move it one day and was shocked at how heavy it was. I've lugged around a few bare Ducati frames and a couple Japanese bike frames, and this thing was massive in comparison.

Not sure why... certainly didn't have to be that way but I guess Harely is more concerned with bikes being too light than too heavy?
