Project budget cafe 1982 CB900F - "Sally"

Never mess with a wookie
Hey guys..

Decided it was time to stop lurking the projects forum and finally post my long-termer.

Started out 2 summers ago finding this cb900f sitting in a barn(seriously) at a previous boss's house. He said I could have it for a case of beer, just had to get it home.

fast forward to this past summer I finally got it home for the princely sum of 20 dollars...

loaded on the moving truck...

Anyway the bike hasn't run since 97 and other than needing a starter, a tank flush/de-rust, and carb rebuild its in wonderful shape. It even came with a nice Weisco 1050 big bore kit installed. I've got big plans for it, but recently falling victim to the economy and losing about 30k a year in salary will dictate what can and can't be done to this. Hell....i'm just happy to have something to tinker with(this and my Buell)

Anyway my vision is a stiffened frame, gsxr front end swap, some kind of stiffer swinger out back, more modern 17" wheels, upgraded suspension, some nice paint, and a decent looking cafe seat (maybe even a tank) with a heavy influence on looking mostly retro - we will see on that. My hope is to be more cafe than fighter, hence the reason I posted it here...

Anyway I'll hopefully get some time this weekend to strip more off of her after working at job number 2 (cycle gear ftw!). I'll keep you guys posted, i've got the itch to really get going on this.

Re: another dohc honda! project budget cafe fighterish CB900F

Hey man, nice bike . I was the dude you met at cycle gear today looking for a helmet. Will be watching this build ...
The paint on the Buell turned out great, what rattle can flip flop did you use? Spraymax is good stuff!

Re: another dohc honda! project budget cafe fighterish CB900F

Did a quick search for one of these right after I saw yours...there's one in Pittsburgh for $500...52k miles...that's a reliable...and big engine.

Re: another dohc honda! project budget cafe fighterish CB900F

Cool build,

Will you be running a fork brace of any kind?

Re: another dohc honda! project budget cafe fighterish CB900F

Yes...I'm taking the "brace" in the fender and using that till I come across a proper one

Re: another dohc honda! project budget cafe fighterish CB900F

Im keeping a close eye on this thread, as I have the same exact bike (in a lot worse condition). Not alot of these 900F's around, and even though there are some similarities with the 750's, there is nothing like watching a build thread of the exact bike you have.

Keep on working, and updating this thread....we are watching.

Re: another dohc honda! project budget cafe fighterish CB900F

subscribed to the build thread.... working on my own CB750 enjoy other DOHC's around this place.

How big of a pain was it to tune the carbs with pods? i've heard bad rumors.... but only rumors.

Re: another dohc honda! project budget cafe fighterish CB900F

The bike will still run with the pods, but it runs better with an airbox. You'll never be able to tune it in with pods, and you will lose a lot of power. It needs the restriction of the airbox, with all cylinders pulling from the same air space, to create vacuum to raise the slides. Something you could do would be to make a plenum box that connects all four carbs to one or two pod filters. I've seen that done, and it supposedly works better than running a pod on each carb.

Otherwise you need to get different carbs with pull slides. If you're boring the cylinders or changing up the exhaust, it might be a good idea to do that anyway. Keihin CR29s are basically a bolt on replacement.

Re: another dohc honda! project budget cafe fighterish CB900F

Looks like the DOHC's are getting a little more love.

Re: another dohc honda! project budget cafe fighterish CB900F

I like my DOHC bikes. They require more upkeep than the SOHC engines, but they produce ten extra horse stock. If you throw some 900 cams in the 750 motor, they get aggressive as hell too. I think the only reason we don't see more custom DOHCs rolling around is because of the weird frame. Also, the EPA basically neutered the bikes. But that can be rectified with new cams, carbs and exhaust.

Re: another dohc honda! project budget cafe fighterish CB900F

Another huge benefit of the DOHC, no need for an external oil tank.
