Project Rapido XS650 - Build Thread

jdizon

Been Around the Block
Official build thread for my new project.
Started off as a sketch and decided to make this shit happen!

The foundation of the build will be built around a Harley Rapido tank. The frame used is an xs650 special which will have a single downtube from the neck. The Hardtail will be a David Bird looped 0" stretch and 2" drop. It'll be a stubby little bike.

The blueprint (Sketch)

The Tank: Harley Rapido.

The bars used. Not sure if I plan to mount them under or on top of the upper tree.

From your sketch, it looks like you want to go with the David Bird hardtail. I'm definitely interested to hear how that process goes. Heard stories from both sides of the fence.

Yup pulled the trigger on a David Bird tail, 0" stretch 2" drop. I'll post pics of the process. Hope it comes in soon. Just collecting parts for the build.

Pretty cool man. I see from your other thread you're also building a "brat" XS at the same time. Busy busy busy... Haha

Haha yeah. Just stripped the brat build down and getting the frame and swingarm powder-coated :)

David Bird looped tail 0" stretch 2" drop ordered yesterday :)

Looking for a nacelle type headlight and fork covers right now to match.

Decided to reuse mid frame section for the mid controls. Similar to the Fong bros bikes. Section I'm talking about highlighted in red.

Looks awesome - I presume you made the bars? They look pretty much exactly like what I'd like to use on my project.

For fork covers, check out Vintage Customs http://vintagecustoms.tumblr.com/parts

I've got a set of them in raw steel - they're very nicely made, and heavy duty stuff. I have to cut mine down as my front end is lowered 3-4 inches, but Jay can make them to measure I believe. I just wasn't sure how low my front end would be so I decided to cut them myself.

Read Tim's post again... he asked if your made the bars yourself... not if you had bars...

Like the direction this thing is going... nice around town head turner.

I bought the bars about a year ago from Front Street Cycles. Was planning to use them on another project bit it sat.

Will check the bars out. But I'm planning on keeping the rubber bushings to isolate the vibrations a bit (my cafe is a pain in the everything to ride for more than 30 mins) and it looks like those bolt solid to the tree to avoid having them join together.

Oh yeah... just found my bars guy. Will be shooting him an email. Always good to find guys like Front Street and Jay at Vintage Customs.

I used the stock bushing with the bars when I had them installed. Front street and Vintage Customs are very good shops and can only speak good things about them.

Mockups with fork covers and a different tank and head light.
