Project RD400 CutNPaste

Thanks Lyn Garland for selling me the wrong L/H crank seal. No I have to order one from the UK.

Started putting the engine together, realized I forgot to order a gasket set and the piston clips for the gudgeon pins. Arghhh I was all ready to take pics and post this. Should have some progress in a week or so.

Ok I got the piston clips and the gasket set. Now I need to polish the head as it has 15 years of tree sap on it.

Here is how I sit so far. Next up is rebuilding the oil pump and carbs.

Persistance pays off. I found that damn woodruff key. Got the head on,timed it. Now the rest of the bike to do.

Yeesh the rest of this bike is a mess, as far as brakes go. Once I get brakes figured out it should be no problem. I may just order brembos as the stock ones have seized pistons in the calipers.

If you have the MC still hooked to the caliper, you can just pump the lever till the piston pops out.

I just use compressed air. at around 60 psi even the most stuck piston pops out with a bang. Fingers have to be well out of the way if you want to keep them though.

You guys forget. This bike sat so long under a pine tree that the tree grew through the frame. So this means 15 years of tree sap as well.

Bike is looking really nice, Are you planning on keeping the tank plain white?

Yes the bike will be white and blue. Not sure if i want to do bump seat or flat seat yet. The daytona rd tanks are hideous in my opinion. Anyone have any suggestions for tank.

Tell me you don't mean that... The Daytona tank is a precursor to the LC tanks and they add a touch of roundness (is that a word?) to the familiar RD profile.

If you don't like it, try to do a swap with tank side covers and seat for an earlier bread box tank plus a wad of cash. They are fairly rare.
