Do what you do man, I dig it and can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks it will take a while, i will only be able to start swinging spanners in 6 weeks, and my available time is less than 4 months a year I still have to fit in rallies, family and other projects. The joys of working offshore...

There are people on here that are on all ends of the spectrum, but that is what is so great about this site. It has a bunch of guys that have great connections to.

I have ordered my new cam chain tensioners, they should be waiting for me when i get home. As a matter of course, i will be doing at least a double bypass, i will check the stator out before i replace it. Cam chain is also being replaced. I cant wait to get home, this waiting is driving me crazy!

Ok, quick question, how are you all attaching your seats? Ive been looking for ideas on securing the upholstry to the actual pan, and then the pan to the frame, but most people just show the completed seat, then the seat mounted, but never the actual mounting process... or am i just not looking properly? (I have looked.., promise) advice or links to relevant thread would really be appreciated, thank you. (I have already bookmarked bedlamwerx's incredibly useful post on making your own seat pan and hump ) at this point I'm considerng hinges.. i will be keeping side covers, air box and otiginal battery position, im not so keen on the empty fframe look. (Yes, I know, its more cafe' to be empty...)

Here's my solution. It could probably be adapted to what you're envisioning.

Notice the cut lines.

Trimmed seat base. retains the seat latches and tank tab. I you were just going to upholster the seat base, I'd leave more pan closer to the back of the tank.

I went further, but my end result is different than what your vision is.

What it does do is allow you to pretty much leave be under your seat and keeping the latches allows easy access. I also hacked the rear mud guard off where it attaches to the frame bridge to eliminate having to further fabricate a hugger.

hey farmer now that the carbs are on the way you wont need that front wheel back on !

Ponderings regarding my seat pan... i am thinking of making a mould of my seat pan and making a cafe style seat hump using that mould...( i am going to try preserve all the parts i replace, so one day, if i get another cx as a restoration project, i will have a box to rummage in. Yes, i know, i admit to being a bit of a hoarder...)
The original seat is a bit rusty though, so maybe i will chop it up. I like the idea of an easily removable seat, thats why i was thinking hinges before.
However it works out, i will be learning to weld...

Thanks Farmer-john, that is very helpful! That definitely helps, i have a plan forming in my head already...

No problem. I see you're also a 2 valve GS fan, I also own an '80 850g. Very likely my next project.

She was near immacculate until I was knocked off by a non concentrating cager. The bike was totalled, but, having huge sentimental value, i decided to re-build rather than scrap. It has been a long frustrating road, but im nearly there. Fix an electrical nuisance, braided brake hoses and get my fairing sprayed and she is good as, or better than, new

A quick update, my new lever assemblies are in the post, nothing special, off ebay. They will do fine until i can one day source bigger calipers to replace the single pot ones. When this master cylinder goes on, i will get braided hoses and new pads to help improve the braking. I will give the calipers a nice service too.

I have ordered my gauges, hopefull they will be at home waiting for me by the time i get back. I think these will look amazing once they are on the bike and wired in. Apparently its a bit of a mission, but well worth it in the end
