Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) VIDEO!

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

Yeah. DUal-sport generally implies it'll work "well enough" on or off road, that's where I got the preconceived notion from.
I can see what you're getting at though, now, more of like a vintage trial bike with the ability to go on the road if necessary.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

I know this isn't the idea setup for off road use but, i'm just throwing around ideas.......i'm running out of them, and my exhaust is beginning to sweat like a turkey does the day before thanksgiving.

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) I HATE AIR FILTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

make a 2 to 1 air intake and put a big ass K&N in the middle dunno if it'd fit in there for sure just throwing ideas out there

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) I HATE AIR FILTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ohhh man. I'm facing the same problem!
Dang monoshocks... Have you looked at the angled UNI Filters?
http://www.unifilter.com/online%20catalog/universal.html

That's the route I think I'm going to go.
I'll be sure to watch this one...

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) I HATE AIR FILTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I looked at the UNI filters Think they might work but, I went with the k&n because they are tapered so I thought they would fit better. I still might give them a shot if the k&n filters don't work out.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) BOUT' TIME!

I decided to bite the bullet and cut the exhaust. I'm really glad I did because it was so much easier than all the screwing around I had been doing before. I just made a cut, rotated the bend a few degrees and re-welded it an pow! now everything fits. This project should really take off now. My front tire came in the mail today. Its a metzler karoo. I picked it up off of ebay for $15.38 with 100 miles on it. It still has tits on it! It is a $115 tire. I was stoked. I also took a picture of the bike with the paint stripped off the tank to try and change the minds of all the XT tank haters out there. haha ;D

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) I HATE AIR FILTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man, I dig the XT tank. It definitely fits the role.

Keep up the good work, my man.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) I HATE AIR FILTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for stripping the tank. It did indeed make my XT tank-hating self realize the beauty of it! :p :p Looking good man. Glad you cut the exhaust and it made things better in the end!

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) I HATE AIR FILTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha...... I'm just busting on ya. ;) I am very glad to get the whole air filter thing behind me. Thanks to everyone for all the tips and suggestions.

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) I HATE AIR FILTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

hows the front suspension holding up on that thing? I had a XT350 last year and man every jump, wheelie, bump I hit the front end bottomed out and smacked really hard

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) I HATE AIR FILTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its holding up great! There aren't to many bumps sitting on the bench. :)

lol I guess you havent gotten it out much? wondering how thats going to work with the heavier motor

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

good move on cutting the pipes now things are really going to go together. looking good!

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Yeah I hope to be painting in a couple weeks. I may upgrade the forks down the road, but that will give me something to do next winter. :) Right now I am just focusing on getting it together and ready to ride for the summer. I did weigh the engines when they were out of the chassis. The 350 came in at about 90LBS. and the 400 at about 120LBS. so there is some weight gain there.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Thanks, It worked out well and was much easier than all the other options I was thinking about. I was mitering and welding up all these crazy angled pieces trying to make some state of the art intake system then I just thought.....duh, just cut the exhaust......30 min later everything fit. I just had to biter the bullet and do it. Now I can move on to the cool stuff.

yeah true thats not too big of a difference you don't look to heavy yourself and I'm sure at one point theres been a XT350 rider was 30+ lbs heavier than you. just a side note I know its your plans down the road but I looked into beefing up the front suspension and a rider online said he made his heavier and did a decently sized jump and bent the frame, just saying keep that in mind

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Looks brilliant mate, nice work with the exhaust mods and tank stripping.

Look forward to seeing it all come together now.
