Rear Shock Absorber recommendations

Hi All,

I just picked up my Ace yesterday and am already planning some upgrades.

I would like to know what rear shock absorbers people are using and what has been found to work well. There are lots of cheap options (<$100) but knowing if any of those work well is another matter. There are of course the 00racing options but shipping to Australia doesn't help.

I have done a few searches and seen some names like RFY and Hagon come up but would like to hear anyones experience.

Cheers,
Mitch

Love my Ikon shocks, but they cost a bit more than most would think reasonable!

Have you checked the Skyteam Ace Build Database?
(leave a thank-you note for 2b if you find it useful)

Thanks Crazy and Swamp. I have ordered some of the Mostyn shocks. Hopefully they're an improvement over the stock items.

I can't justify the price of the Ikon shocks but I don't doubt they are worth the money.

Lol, ANYTHING is an improvement over the original 'shocks', because technically they are only a 'spring' no shock absorbing at all.

I bought some RFY shocks off ebay for $100 or so, work perfectly due to such a light weight bike.

Hahha yeah man I can 100% guarantee they're a massive improvement...

With the back end not pogoing you will find that the front end diving will be much more noticeable; do you plan on modifying the forks with pre-load or some such?

Just not sure the best method to do it?

This worked for me (10mm bolt):

The new rear shocks are on but not yet tested. Had to swap bushes over between the original and the new shocks as they arrived with 10mm bushes.

I have had a go at adding some front fork preload but need some help. I got the top yoke off without too much trouble. I just have no idea how to undo the cap on the top of the fork. When I go to undo it, the whole leg just spins? I feel like I'm missing a step.

Mine were a pig to remove!

Corrosion is probably causing the problem, plus heavy-handed assembly.

Put the top yoke back on, loosen clamping bolts and slide the fork legs up through the yokes.

When the top of the legs are an inch or so clear of the top yoke tighten both top and bottom pinch bolts.

Try steady pressure with the longest handled spanner you have (use some sort of extension if you can).

If that fails to shift them, give the spanner a sharp smack with the heaviest hammer you've got!

And don't forget to put some anti-seize on the threads when you re-assemble!

Thanks for the tips. I found that having the pinch bolts done up tight enough to stop the fork spinning made all the difference. I had to take the brake hose bracket off that side to tighten the pinch bolt enough.

After struggling with reinstalling the first side I used the bolt that holds the top yoke to the fork and a socket to make it easier to push down and spin. Much much easier that trying to push down and twist the top cap by itself.

Which ones did you get - the 340mm?
