Hey all

Ive started to cafe my CB450 from 1974. I need some nice rear shocks for it. Would appreciate links to dealers. It doesnt have to be for CB 450 but needs to fit to orignal swingarm and frame.

All help would be great :)

alrighty... now you get to start finding out some of the hellish stuff about old hondas... rear shocks: in their infinite wisdom honda chose to have the lower end of it's shocks with fork fitting instead of an eye like, um, oh, let's see... EVERY otherr bike manufacturer... so your choices are somewhat limited. i've shopped around a bit and have found the works shocks which are crazy expensive, but i gather super good... probably the goto shock if you were racing. (linky: http://www.worksperformance.com/html/vintage.html ) and in a more reasonable price range i found yss who makes shocks in modern and old skool all chrome looks. (linky: http://www.yssusa.com/honda.php ) k... that's all i got... hopefully some other people will chime in with some more info for you!

Ok :) YSS are crap made in china and sold as the best...not so, I've been down this road on several occasions and the choice is limited :(
So what do you do, first if you can find a set of original Koni's then they are the pick of the cheeper end, you'll still pay $200-$300 for excellent condition shocks and they come up on EvilBay quite regularly and can be rebuilt, if needed.
Hagon I've heard good and bad reports about them and the build quality is average and performance is on par with YSS.
Ikon assembled in Australia from imported and local parts (china) and are a copy of the Koni (in fact they are Koni's as Koni sold the licence etc to build them and they are now called Ikon's) cost $300ish + and are of good quality think top end of the cheeper new shocks.
Redwings, made in Japan from the 60's on and still can be seen on Evilbay for around $130ish NOS, good quality and good value, but rember these may have been sitting around for up 40 years so the oil may have degraded and is of a lesser quality then modern oils, i believe these can't be rebuilt , may be wrong though ;D
then there is the rest Ohlin's (since 1976 will be NOS if you can find any) Girling same a Ohlins, Marzocchi brilliant shock and rebuildable once again NOS or second hand and rebuild and the list goes on Ceraini, Eagle etc. Don't forget Showa as they made some good OEM shocks, 1980's CB900f etc had good shocks.

So what do you want to pay and is the bike for show or go ;) is the answer to your Question!

RodZonda,
Thanks for the info... Good to talk to people who have actually used the product! Just to follow up on the YSS, I'm looking at them for my CB because of their appearance and price rather than performance (only use Ohlins on my race bike!). So just how crappy are they compared to say, the 39 year old stockers I have now? Surely they'd be no worse? Or????

The stock shocks on old Hondas are Showas and they are very good quality. But they are dull and tend to be a bit bouncy. For general street use, get a pair of stockers. There's plenty of them around for dirt cheap. The ones without the top shrouds look a bit sportier.

On worse :D make sure you get the right length!! sounds silly, but they had two attempts at suppling mine for the 450K2 :) Showa's as DrJ said are still a great shock and can be had for cheep money, I must clarify YSS, there standard range are average/crap but there custon range are quite good ;) I have a friend who races VMC (VMC champ for a few years) and he swears by them ;D
