removing chrome and painting exhaust

rundown

Been Around the Block
Looking through the site I can't find any information specifically on removing chrome and then re-doing the exhaust system with paint (flat black). I can only imagine that all the chrome must be removed to get a decent bond for the paint? What paint will stand up to the heat of the exhaust (XS500 Yamaha).

The reason i want to do this is because I have read how hard it is to get the XS500 running well with Pods and after market exhaust fitted. My pipes are OK, one has a lot of surface rust the other is a bit road rashed, but both are solid (although heavy). So my thought was to remove the rust and chrome and Paint them black. Suggestions?

use high temp paint...

sandblast your pipes. patch the holes, chances are if you have rust, you have leaks.

I was afraid that sand blasting would be required to remove the chrome, damn. Is there a "favorite" hi temp paint, or is Rustoleum Bar B Q paint the ticket? What about priming, special hi temp primers must be required?

VHT high heat exhaust paint is what you want. No primer necessary just make sure or CLEAN and the surface isn't smooth (ie not chrome)

I have ha decent results painting over chrome you just have to really tear it up with some sand paper first.
