They looked great last year. The glue looked fine. The glue and brakes are 30 years old.

Someone else here already said it. Did I listen? NO! Do I know Better? Yes! Did I learn the hard way? Yes.

Ordering brakes tonight.

Word to the wise...When restoring old motorcycles, REPLACE THE BRAKE SHOES!

Lucky I handled the sudden deceleration o.k. as a wild ride from 30MPH to 0 MPH with the rear wheel locked up.

So, lesson learned the medium hard way.

Re: REplace your OLD rear brakes or this will happen!

Glad you're safe!

Rule of thumb, kids. Everything rubber as well as bearings and brakes. No matter how clean, no matter how low the mileage...

Re: REplace your OLD rear brakes or this will happen!

I actually have said the same to others, right on this site. Doctor, heal thyself....LOL...

Re: REplace your OLD rear brakes or this will happen!

Glad this story isn't accompanied with an address to send flowers to! Bet that was fun.

Re: REplace your OLD rear brakes or this will happen!

And on the bright side, it was a rear drum brake.....not a front drum brake.

REplace your OLD rear brakes or this will happen!

Front would of been painful. I have front disc. I have the new pads sitting here ready to go on. Rear would be with my next order, I like to make larger orders to save on shipping.

I knew I needed them, I just waited too long. Lesson learned.

My Titan shoes did that just sitting in the shop. New old stock yellow box asbestos Emgo brake shoes. Had them in the wheel for about 5 years without using it, accidentally kicked the rim one day and the linings popped off the backing plates. Really sucks, asbestos linings are damned hard to find.

The new EBC brakes are "Organic", basically a kevlar base that replaces the asbestos. For the amount of rear brake I use, I just need something to keep metal off metal. No front brakes, if you have drums, that's different. What is better about asbestos, say over sintered, is they don't wear the drums out. But then again, they do fade, so it is a tough choice.

I like the ceramic pads on my car. they seem to wear a long time (50-60K miles) and are much lower dust then the organics or semi-metallics.

I'd put ceramics pucks on my front if they were available, but the organics will have to do.

One reason why I picked up a new set of EBC's front and rear regardless if my current ones "look" like they are in good shape. I have no of way knowing if the PO replaced them.....if ever.

I sanded the old shoes, looked very closely at them, they looked fine. Evidently after sitting 25 years they looked ok until they got a little hot from use.

I won't ever make that mistake again...
