Going to be helping a friend replace the top end gaskets in his new GS850. I have more experience than him but that isn't saying much. we'll both be doing/learning this for the first time. So what should I be looking at/watching out for while I have it apart. I found a manual for free online. not sure if its a chilton or haynes but seems pretty good.
Are you just talking about replacing the cam cover gasket? Hit all the bolts with a flat punch / drift square on top before you attempt to remove then (they can be easy to strip / break otherwise). Check the valve clearances while you're there. A bit of Yamabond / 3Bond on the rubber end caps as well.
If you are doing the head gasket, make sure you don't mix up the washers for the head nuts. From memory, there are some copper ones which are used on the external studs to stop oil leaking out (doesn't matter for the studs inside the cam cover obviously).
Thanks for the replies. it was going to be going all the way down to the gasket between the case and the jugs. but my friend decided he'd rather sale it and get something else than do the work this one needs.
