RIP Isadora

Some of you that have been around for a while may remember t71ford's XS360 project "Isadora". When his wife out grew the bike, I bought it last spring for my little brother, Ben, to learn to ride on. He's been doing really well over the past year, but that ended yesterday, May 20. It was my birthday, so we decided on a little celebratory ride. I let him lead for most of the ride, taking it at his comfort level. A few miles into the ride (narrow, somewhat curvy road) we passed a guy in a truck, and wanting to put a little more distance between us and the truck, I jumped into the lead and took up the pace a bit. We hit a sweeping left, and after the turn I looked in my mirror and he wasn't there. Boy what a shitty feeling. I flipped a U-turn and went back to the turn to find him in the ditch and the bike in pieces. The guy in the truck stopped to help, and later when I asked him what he saw, said my brother went wide, off the road, hitting the narrow ditch going end over end.

Ben said as he entered the turn, he got a nasty head shake and lost control. I'm inclined to believe him, but I think target fixation played a role as well, with him being so new to riding. He said as soon as the shake started, he totally lost concentration, stopped looking through the turn, and panicked, basically going straight.

He's a bit bruised and sore, but thanks to proper gear, escaped with only a fractured rib and damaged pride...in a 40mph crash. He's definitely lucky in the fact that he came to rest about three feet before several large boulder-sized chunks of concrete. (no idea what they were doing out in the middle of nowhere...!) I feel partly responsible for taking him out of his comfort zone with the increased speed, as well.

Isadora's too far gone to be worth fixing. The engine and maybe the frame (I haven't looked it over closely yet) are the only parts of the bike that didn't get damaged. Here she is on the left a year ago:

If anyone has any ideas on how to cheer him up a little, I'm all ears. He's beating himself up a lot, as the bike was a gift to him. We'll be looking into another bike for him this fall.

Anyways, ride safe guys. And for crying out loud, wear your gear. It's the only reason he escaped with as little injury as he did.

Shit Chris... Sorry to hear that man. Just be glad hes ok. And honestly, I dont think theres anything that'll cheer him up for a few days. Gotta let that pride heal a bit first. After that, the strip club is always a good idea. Let him pay... Hahaha...

Man, I'm glad your brother is alright. As someone who just went through a very similar experience, I know how he feels. I keep thinking about what I could have done differently and maybe my bike wouldn't be trashed.

I remember when I first started riding I had something similar happen. As I was making a sweeping left going about 40 I got some crazy head shake and nearly lost it when I hit some pine needles. I recovered but it scared the crap outta me. Never happened again.

If the engine and frame are ok, it can be rebuilt, though admittedly it will take awhile.

Again, glad he was wearing his gear and faired so well.

Really glad to hear your brother Ben is o'k!! 8)

As we all know, bikes can be fixed or replaced, but damage to the body.... :p

glad to hear your bro's ok. The best way to get over someone is to get under someone else ;D the same, but reverse its true for bikes, lol

Glad to hear that your brother is mosyly okay. Just remind him that every rider, sooner or later lays it down. It doesn't matter how good you are.

If the frame and engine are okay...perhaps a brother project bike would chear him up?

Glad he's basically OK. Best thing for him is to get back on a bike riding ASAP of course, so he doesn't completely lose confidence. That and get him wrenching :)

Crap man......that sucks. Glad to hear he is (mostly) ok.

Hopefully he will be back riding something, even if it's not the little XS. And don't blame yourself for leading too far ahead.

Anything we can do to help, just say the word of course.

ill second that, there’s no better felling then creating something. If it was me I’d be humbled to have my brother beside me building a bike that we both could contribute time, money blood and sweat towards.

I kept trying to tell ya....that's what happens when you have flowers on a dude's bike!

J/K man, glad you are both ok. +1 on having him help you build the next one!

Couldn't say it better . Other than he should see what I did to a few in the early days ...
Too far gone ? Never . Do get started on another but healing Isadora will be part of his healing process .

Really glad to hear he escaped without too much injury. I know he said it was headshake but, like you said, more likely target fixation. Maybe a good time to point it out and explain, after his pride is healed though.

Glad he walked away, I have come close to that a few times and it is sooo hard to not look strait at the ditch, truning your head away and getting through the turn is hard, get him back riding as soon as you can and practice that turn until he can do it with his eyes closed and he will be fine. A brother bike rebuild would be cool, let us know if it can be done and we can help with parts etc.

Cheers,

Maritime

Yes sir, glad he is alright. Please let us know what you need to get him back on two wheels. I am sure that a lot of us have usable parts laying around.

If you can't rebuild Isadora, build something else with him.

get him riding asap! I crashed on a xs360 as well, and it took me 8 years to get back in the saddle.

Glad to hear he's doing good. Maybe one way to cheer him up is with a team build, I don't know how skilled your brother is, but you have plenty of skills to share. That should keep him interested and a good time for the both of you. I'll be looking out for a team build. One again glad he doing good, we can always get another bike.

jesus screw the bike man glad your bro is ok!!! nothing better than putting on some miles with your bro man!

Well Ive heard it said " There are two kinds of riders, those that have fallen and those that haven't fallen yet ".

Main thing is, hes ok. Well, a cracked rib is a daily reminder that bikes are dangerous, and you've got to respect your level of skill, the bike and the road. It could have been way worse. Good life lesson. Could save his life one day! And that's worth all the crashed bikes in the world.

Exact thing happened with my little bro. We rebuilt his Aprilia RS250 over December. Two rides in, goes super hot into a fast corner, target fixes, off the road, over the handlebars. Don't know his exact speed, but I was around 60+mph. He got lucky with sprains and bruises. Full leathers.

His biggest hurdle was getting over being pissed with himself that he'd been so stupid. He went over and over the crash in his head for weeks. He would even visit the crash site after work. Couldn't let it go.

He'd get down every time he saw the crashed bike in my garage. We've been rebuilding the bike together and its been great. In fact next weekend it should be done. Healed.

Everything happens for a reason. I'm sorry your brother has lost his bike. That sucks. But as is the general consensus - he lived to ride another day. Next chapter.
