Rookie with a 1967 CB160

This is my first posting and I am not sure how this is going to go, but I must be a moron.

I have a 1967 Honda CB160 that I am trying to get up and running and i ran into a snag. The throttle started to stick and I thought that it was a frayed cable, but it turned out that the "what I think is called the slider valve" was sticking. So I removed the sliders and carburetor and cleaned them. Now, when I try to put the slider back down the tube, it seems to get stuck half way.

How tight should the slider be? Should it fit snug, is something wrong? Should I be using some type of WD40?

Please Help a Rookie out.

Thank you

make sure your putting it in the correct way, they can only go in one way and be very careful. I'm not sure about the wd-40 on it..

Is the bore smooth inside the carb? Take some pics and post em up. That would help us to diagnose. Sometimes on old carbs the cast bits get pitted and worn out. Doesnt allow for everything to work smoothly.

When I look down the slider with the needle pointing down, I see a long slit on one side that allows the throttle cable to slide through and a shorter, wider slit on the opposite side of the latter. Inside the tube there is a small knob in the middle of the tube, and a bigger one towards the bottom. I have been lining these slits and knobs up, but it still seems to be catching. Shouldn't the slide move freely within the chamber?

The bore seems to be smooth. I am not sure how well the pics will turn out but I will try when I get home. The funny thing is, that they seemed to move smoothly when it was running last week, but for some reason they got stuck and now they don't seem to fit at all. I can put it in about two thirds of the way before it gets tight.

The bottom of the slide should have a taper - that taper points towards the air filter.

Are you sure it's the slide that's sticking and not a bent needle?

So far so good. The small protrusion is teh guide pin and the long thin slit on the slide engages in that to stop the slide from rotating. The fatter short slot is where the throttle stop screw pushes on the bottom of the slide to adjust idle speed.

As Rich mentioned, first step is to see if the slides are identical or if they are mirror images of each other. Next - be sure that the cutaway is facing the filter and not the engine.

Then lower the slide into the bore and rotate it back and forth until you feel the slot engage on the guide pin. It is not uncommon for the needle to sit slightly off center and it hangs up on the side of the needle jet. Look down the bore of the carb for that.

Yes. The needle lines up perfectly.

I did that as you said, but still sticking. I have a 1975 CB200T that is very similar. So I opened up the carb on it to test the fluidity of the slide, and it slides up and down effortlessly. I can't find any thing that might be snagging on the inside, nor is there any gunk built up. AAAHHHGGGGG!!!!

hmmm... without actually seeing it its tough to guess.

The slides seem to be in great shape. The cylinders have a few scratches in them, but nothing is jagged to where it would prevent it from going in. Is the cylinder that the slide fits down into tight at the top and loose at the bottom?

Shouldn't be. What size carbs are they? I have some 20mm Keihins from a 68 CL175 that I would be willing to sell cheap.

Try taking the throttle cables off and the needles out and see if either of them are holding up the slides. If it still wont go all the way down, you have a real problem.

I took the throttle cables off, needles and the rest. I have even attempted to get some fine 3m sandpaper to sand down any gunk that might be causing it, but it still gets stuck. Honestly, I think that the sliders didn't originally come from these carburetors.

I am interested in the carbs that you have. How much would you sell them for?

Make sure they fit first - if you can use them I'll sell them to you for $30. They aren't perfect, but the slides work......

Normally I would say you could just cross reference it on www.BikeBandit.com, but it's not showing the Keihins I have as being used on ANYTHING else. Which is downright silly.

Measure the distance between the mounting bolts, the slide diameter, and the inner diameter of the "exit" bore - I can measure the Keihins I have and tell you if they'll fit.

Do ou have a digital caliper? If so, please measure the diameter and height of the slides and I can tell you if they are stock or not. If they "almost" fit but are sticky, there's a chance the bores may be distorted.

Somewhere here we have a set of CB160, 175 and 200 carbs can check them against.

I spoke with Von. He sid they would fit my bike. Basically the same motor. How do I get in touch with you?

Don't have a digital caliper. I am a beginner for the lack of words.
