Royal Enfield classic 500, clubman interpretation.

Twitter? No sir. No bike of mine will ever tweet. Pinterest is bad enough, but no twitter!

I’m assuming you’re referring to that bell like sound I’ve heard from Goldstars on trailing throttle? I’ll post it if it does.

you got it. An original design Goldie silencer has a distinctive sound when you back off the throttle. Back when I had a 350 GS. I think the pipe on mine came from Eddie Dow, but it's too long ago to remember.

What was surprising about that bike was that it was so nice to ride fast around sweeping curved Scottish roads in summer. Not a ton of power but that's what you expect from a street single. Good luck with your RE. Looks like a fun project.

This is a UK produced “silencer” and head pipe. I realize it’s not the right bend in the head pipe, but it’s good quality.

I also realize my little “project” isn’t the norm for DTT and that I’ve done very little of the actual labor, but having attempted a few other “projects” (basket cases) and failing miserably, I did what was right for me.

next will be some break in, then see what it needs in the suspenders catagory. Possibly, relacing period correct shouldered alloys to the stock hubs.

only then will I work on the looks. I’m not terribly fond of all that mat black, but it’s the only way to get the black wheels and engine from the factory.

I dig the fact that I know a couple of you know the reason I love thumpers. I’ve owned a couple previously (‘79 SR500, ‘14 Enfield CGT) and my pops had a Victor, so my affection for these things has spanned...ahem...like 6 decades.

Thanks for the kind words!

ARMOURS in the UK make an original pattern Goldie silencer. I had them make me a special in stainless for one of my BMW Kays. The twitter is somewhat muted on a 4 into 1 system, but back in the day we fitted them to just about everything and yes they do twitter on the overrun - on twins as well ! That's 2 separate exhausts and also Siamese. One of the sweetest sounding versions was my pal's Super Rocket with sweptback pipes and twin Goldie silencers. The accepted wisdom in the day ["those that think they know everything are annoying the shit out of those of us who do " ] was that the twitter was due to the valve timing overlap on the Goldie ........................

Here it sits as of yesterday (Saturday), around 70% done. Have a set of Hyde M bars to go on and I'd like to do something with the monstrosity of a tailight.

Hey man, I love British singles also.. for a time I had an all original '46 BSA C11. I love this RE that you picked up. May I ask what year it is and how much you paid for it, if you are comfortable answering that? Just would like to get an idea, I might add a bike like this to my list of potential bikes to pickup this summer.

It's a 2020. I'll have close to 9000 into it by time I'm "done", Bike itself retails for 5800. But you don't have to do the work on it to have fun with it.

Thanks

Wow, that's a damn good price for a 2020 and a damn good looking bike. I appreciate the information my friend. And I will be following your build here for sure, that is a great looking cycle.

Cockpit is complete. Hyde M bars and Napoleons. You’ll notice the blue tape on the tank. A stop to lesson the steering lock needed to be fabricated to keep the switch gear from smacking the tank.

I am absolutely ready for warmer weather and this stupid “social distancing” and self quarantining to be done.
I seriously want to ride.

Riding is social distancing...!

(And if you're going to be eliminating the matte black, I think a nice, deep sapphire blue would be awesome for the bodywork against the existing frame and engine black...)

While that would look good. in my desire to create a period piece, my current plan is to stick with a more traditional. old timey (?) color that may or may not have been offered. So, some of the black will remain, but tank and side cover color? Not sure yet. I have time, plus at 4 miles on the clock, I have other fish to fry first.

Deep BRG always looks good on Enfields too, just sayin.

Enjoy that fish frying...!

So, I finally got a short break from work and weather and picked it up. Sorry to report, no twitter.

But the good, it sounds great and pulls well.
The not so great, it has an intermittent miss that's quite annoying.
things it needs, mild rearsets and some miles.

I was quite surprised at how smooth the engine ran. I do think the anti vibration plate was a worth while bit. with 36 miles on the clock, I'm not really coming close to ringing it out, but impressive none the less.

My semi educated guess on the cause of the miss is either the plug (not super likely), or the plug lead, cap or coil.

Ironically, my previous Enfield did the same thing right out of the crate.

Enfields which aren't smooth usually have a poorly balanced crank out of the factory...such a simple thing they so often fail to do well...

Hope you sort out the miss. Could be fueling, possibly, instead of electrical?

It’s been a couple months and I’ve got a few miles on her. I think this is the bike I should have bought 5 years ago, when I bought my Continental GT.

Solved the miss by downloading the MAP the good people at Hitchcock’s wrote for it. The fueling was off the equivalent of 7 jet sizes (lean) in spots. Surprised it ran as well as it did.

And in this age of question, paranoia and social distancing, I decided to do an oil change myself. What a freaking mess Enfield made of doing that job, with 7 separate fasteners, a screen and the tiniest filter cartridge imaginable. Plus the fact I have no lift...or shed/garage...

anyway

love this bike and looking forward to playing with it some more.

short clip from yesterday of one of my favorite rides.

This is a shorty from the next section. Includes a tour of Hell (Michigan).

Clearly the problem is that it's only running on one cylinder...........

I'll see myself out.
