Seat padding???

Ok so I have been working on a fiberglass seat and I'm just about to the point where I need to make the cushin. What are you guys using for your padding? And any suggestions on where to get it? I am also picking up a vintage sewing macine and I'm going to try to do my own cover...we'll see how this turns out seeing as I have no experience with sewing at all!
 
lots of choices. I like using a particular closed cell foam I can get cheap as a kneeling pad at Princess Auto in Canada, others us off cuts off carpet pad, yoga mats etc. all depends on how thick you want it and comfort etc. I've had good luck ordering leather off EBay for seats. There are sellers of leftovers from making sofas etc. and you can get a big enough piece in loads of colours for around $35 shipped usually.
 
I've used the same kneeling pad before that Maritime mentions and it worked out great. Easy to shape and very comfortable. For my past two bikes though I've gone with using layered sheets of 6 mm closed cell foam that I glue together. For my MB5 I used two sheets (so 12 mm) and my CB350 I used three (18 mm). I also find this comfortable and you can basically shape it anyway you want. I don't cover them just leave as is so can't really offer any help with the covering aspect.
 
I use rebond carpet padding (often available from an installer or store as scrap). It's ~ 1/2" thick and you build the layers using 3M 80 spray adhesive (big box store). Shape with electric carving knife. Let us know if you use your wife's so we can bid on your stuff when she kicks you out. A nice thin layer over it (thin yoga mat) smooths it out nice for the cover.

I did this on a fiberglass replica of a GL1000 pan for my '78 frame '75 engine bike. The hump was built up on a closed-cell packing foam piece I carved up.

I did the same as Perry on one seat and it was 8+ hours comfortable. I road from Moncton, NB to Bridgewater NS, all back roads with only short stops for gas and lunch in the pouring rain too and my but never complained. Cafe seat like Perry's top pic only not at pretty.

My wife was born in the 90s. She doesnt even know what the hell an electric carving knife even is! Lol

What density are you using ? I've found several providers and they all have different densities available !

Get the highest density they have in rebond. They may have higher densities in other types, but they are usually some waffle pattern and not for this. For my Hunley build, I stopped by a "carpet warehouse" and they gave me a large chunk that was left over for free. If it has the nylon netting on one side, it doesn't hurt anything and sometime will strip off with a good tug.

Thanks, I'll ( probably, project under construction ) go for the naked foam seat, so it has to be 100% black foam, like HerrDeacon did
 
Not sure where in Brussels you'd find it but it is a closed cell foam like a thick neoprene rubber.
