Setbacks or blunders to your cafe projects?

Stroll around the net and find out exactly how to remove the anti-dive stuff and make a pair of ally plates to cover the holes. Those old anti-dive systems were just a waste of everybodys time.

The problem with block off plates supposedly, is that the ride then becomes too harsh. After looking at the corroded valve, I realized that no fluid circulates around the adjuster. So, I think it is frozen in the number 2 position. There the forks will remain. For freakin' ever. What I had planned to do and will still do is clean out the forks, replace the seals, and maybe slightly heavier weight fork oil. Anyway, I bought those forks purely for the look of the ADVS valves, cause I think they look tits.

Re: Setbacks to your cafe projects?

Setbacks? My current project, and one that I am totally determined to see through and keep, is a 1972 Harley Davidson Sportster 1000cc, which was built from the factory with a right side shifter/left side brake. The bike is an engineering disaster. At every step you say to yourself "what the hell were these guys thinking". Almost every item needs to be carefully thought out and most things need to be re-engineered. Just fitting the seat left me wanting to dump the whole thing and start with something newer. The frame just leaves you scratching your head. The bike is a 1972 but I've seen 1952 bikes that made more sense. And with Harley, nothing is cheap!!! Oh well, like my uncle used to say "press on regardless".

They shim the anti dive stuff so it does'nt work under the cover. If you like the space race looks great, but get rid of the brake line that goes to the anti dive stuff, just run a galfer brake line to the brake cali.

So, I just block off where the brake line fittings go? Great idea! Thanks.

P.S. Here I was thinking, "While I'm at it, I should convert to GPz mag wheels!" That's the kind of veering off the original project's parameters that can sidetrack me and cost mucho dinero. :-D

Re: Setbacks to your cafe projects?

I was laughing at this thread until yesterday. Started to get the back wheel of the sidecar ready to go back in. First I find that the brake arm has seized. Salt, steel and aluminum combo. Makes sense. Get it free and ready. Now I can't find the torque arm and more importantly the nut. A nut is a nut except when it comes to British nuts. A new torque arm I can make in minutes but the nut is making me crazy.

Re: Setbacks to your cafe projects?

Yeah, I try to put things in marked plastic bags. I used to have a box of these Hazmat hospital zip lock bags, perfect for nuts and bolts. Wouldn't you know it? When I don't put stuff in those baggies, or fail to mark them, whatever part it was gets totally lost? I feel your pain, brother.

Re: Setbacks to your cafe projects?

Its OK. I just found them. I had put them along with the adjuster in a box for safe keeping. Moved the box and forget where I moved it to. The box was right in front of me and I couldn't see it!! But I've been doing that most of my life.

Re: Setbacks to your cafe projects?

I spent all day today painting and sanding painting and sanding to get this black paint nice and shiny. was pretty close too. Then I dropped the tank, twice.

Glad you found the nut... but... "He who laughs last..... " ::)

Re: Setbacks to your cafe projects?

I'll laugh anyway. I once put a rebuild Lucas racing mag in a safe spot and it took me three years to find it. And that was only by accident.

Re: Setbacks to your cafe projects?

Hi, getting into my first tear down and rebuild of a bike I am at the stage many of you mentioned: I need this to do that, but I need to do this other thing to know how this might fit, and then "shit" how much is that tool going to cost? One thing I am finding is that while I wait until the next payday or time off to work on the bike I can get alot of dreaming up new ideas done for the build. But then, doing it like this new way is going to add how much to the cost? My wife made me promise that I would only have one project bike at a time. May be she was right as it seems to be way easy to get something to start on and way difficult to get something finished. Cheers

Wow ya, I relate to that. It's scary how bad my memory is at times now!  It seems to be getting worse as the years go by! :p :p

Any other "grey beards" going through this?? :-X It's not Alzheimers yet, but.... It's mostly frustrating and super annoying to KNOW I put something in a safe place and then not be able to find it!!

Sorry for the hijack. Hoof just set me off. ;)

Re: Setbacks to your cafe projects?

I never forget anything. It's the fairies that move things around when I'm not out there. Honestly it is. I'm not making this stuff up.

That scenario happens more often than we'd like to admit to.

Re: Setbacks to your cafe projects?

What scares me is I am going to Bonneville this year. I know where it was when I left last year. I'm worried that it won't be there when I get back this year.

Re: Setbacks to your cafe projects?

;D I started back on the GL resto mod last night and it took me 20 mins of my 1 hour I had to find my damn grinder wrench to change the wheel to a rust remover pad for the exhaust, I put it in a safe place, then moved. I dug through every bloody box, then didn't find it, thought F! it is still back at the other house, then went through the first box again and found it. I am only 38, I will be fully retarded by 60.

I switched over to the screw-on type wheels for that reason! I have so many mismatched grinder wrenches it drove me crazy trying one then another and another. Now I just hold the lock button and unscrew the disc. Makes me a happy camper. :)

Re: Setbacks to your cafe projects?

Ha, I only hve the one grinder. Good idea though as I want to get a couple more for the shop so I can have a cutter, grinder and other always set up to save changing all the time.

Ok, I'm a dumbass. I spent most of the weekend getting the cylinders to my XV ready to paint. Last night, I'm watching Jimmy Fallon in the garage and start to paint. Got two nice coats of gloss black engine enamel laid down. As I'm working on the XV carbs, I see a can of engine primer sitting in front of me. Doh! Totally forgot the freakin' primer!!!!
