Shake the Box CL360/378 - The Hedgehog - Done

FINALLY got to spend some time working on the wee beastie. Feeling better and the weather is great so it's time to get at it.

I had tested out the bar-end turn signals and thought all was going to be fine but once everything was hooked up I ran into a problem similar to the one I had w/ the running light and turns built into the headlight. There are some circuitry/function differences but the issue is essentially the same. After doing more testing and fiddle-farting around I determined that unlike the headlight, the bar-end turns can operate independently w/o having to have power to the running light. I did try putting a diode into the circuits similar to the way was done w/ the headlight to correct the problem there, but that didn't work, so I've just abandoned the marker light function in the bar-end and all is well. If you remember from earlier I had determined that the turn signal built into the headlight was very difficult to see in the daylight w/ the headlight on so I think the bar-end turn is pretty essential for safety sake. It's brighter than it looks in the picture and should be easy to see even in daylight. (Of course I try to ride like I'm invisible anyway, but it is best to do everything you can to be seen, right?)

Great looking ride mate, super clean and love the exhaust. Really nice detailing on the fenders and cowl too. I'm a day late and a dollar short but, well, dammit. I'm here now.

Thank you sir! The "rivets" are kinna' different for sure, but when I'm able to show it as a whole I hope it'll all come together for y'all and make sense. There's a plan that's either going to come together and be unique and interesting or fall on its face and be really stupid... we'll see how it turns out.

The seat pan I glassed up a couple years ago has been resurrected, rehabbed, and refitted.

I’ll get it off to the upholstery guy to get that finished. My buddy @Hurco550 can tell you, though I hope he doesn’t, that I’ve had a couple disasters happen w/ upholstery in the past. I had a guy try two times to get it right and he just didn’t “get it.” His second attempt was so ridiculous that I didn’t even say anything, I just walked out of his shop. I’ve now got somebody else who is highly regarded and does cars, boats and motorcycle seats. The original plan was to go w/ a gray cover to tie in w/ the color of the thing but I’ve decided to go w/ a matt black instead to tie in the black details. I’ll see what the upholstery guy thinks, maybe a gray panel in the black might do it. A piece of the gray in the pix below shows that it probably is a bit too much gray.

I think the spots that were showing up through the primer on the tank have been sorted and the tank is almost ready for final color. I’m going to spend the morning going through the rattle can bling thread again and when the weather permits blast on the color... again... hopefully for the last time. Anyway, onward and upward.

Ha! Hadn't thought about a different stitching color, that'll do the trick, for sure! (Hey Ichiban, send him some stickers please!)

I’ve got the mounts for the seat pan in place and the pan itself has been trimmed up to the size it needs to be. It’s all ready to go out for upholstery. I stopped out there yesterday to talk w/ him and was very impressed with what I saw. Before they went belly up Baja Marine and Checkmate Boats were both located here in town. This guy and his wife both worked in the upholstery department at Baja and their stuff is totally amazing. If you’re not familiar w/ Baja, they were one of the higher end boats that were purchased by high income people like NASCAR drivers and others. Their quality was good and the fit n finish always spot on.

EDIT: Dropped the pan off on 1 May! Anxiously waiting, unfortunately it could take a month, sure hope not!

EDIT 16 Jul '20: Still waiting for the seat! I have checked w/ him and he's got to finish projects for customers paying thousands of $$ to have their very valuable boats completely reupholstered. Good guy and I appreciate his problem. Last fall his brother, who was a friend of mine, died unexpectedly. He relied heavily on his brother to pitch in evenings and weekends to help him w/ the business.

Seats do a lot. I know the one you sent me improved my bikes looks by 100%. Can't wait till I can re-cover it over the winter to get rid of the sewn up tears.

As I said above, I had a really bad experience w/ an upholsterer (trimmer for our friends across the pond). The guy had done some vehicle top work for me in the past and did a fine job. I even took out some picture samples for him. The first try was poor so I took it back and told him again what I wanted and the second try was completely a joke! I acquired the gray one that's in a couple of earlier pictures in this thread and I don't dislike it but I needed the hump back seat pan for a place to hide the battery. Guess I ought to put that one on here and try to sell it. It's brand new and never used, but it won't be for everybody because it's... gray.

I like gray just fine, my 2-up leather I did in gray. That being said on this bike you need the black leather with gray stitches in a diamond or tuck and roll etc. to tie in and have the seat POP.

Yes, that is a nice looking seat, and it also looks comfortable. I see too many 20 mile seats on here. IMHO, seats should be 100 mile minumum unless for an art project (and I have nothing against art projects).

Got the final coats of color on the tank this afternoon. Interesting, looks like there are things I can see in the pix that I can't even see otherwise. The rivets are gong to help things out a bunch as the plan is to, whenever possible, place them strategically to help hide "spots." Up in the top the area where the fuel filler mount was welded in has smoothed right out nicely. Fot the longest time there was a little line on that back side that I had a terrible time getting out. The worst part was that it didn't show in primer so I'd get it all ready and spray a coat of color and the transition would show. work some more at it and then, again it would show. Finally, this time it's good. That sport bike filler looks like it's always been there.
