Shorai Phantom Black Battery

BriMed1983

Been Around the Block
Hate to beat a dead horse but I couldn’t find a answer in pervious small battery threads. I need to upgrade my battery and have narrowed it down to two. Not sure which to go with

Shorai APP09A2-BS12 Phantom Black Small 12V 9Ah Case Type-2 Amazon.com$115

Or

Shorai APP14A1-BS12 Phantom Black Small 12V 14Ah Case Type-1 Amazon.com$159

My only real concern is 9ah or the 14ah (size wise they are both similar so I could co either way)

- 74 CB360
- keeping the electric start for occasional use
- upgrading the headlight to a 60W H4 beam.

I already have the Ricks power sports “HOT SHOT” Stator and R/R from Dime City Cycles (to be installed this weekend or when I have time)

Any thoughts or concerns would be greatly appreciated.

Brian.

Any reason you're not looking at the higher Ah in the smaller Type 2 case? Might as well buy the smallest size battery you can. Case #2 ranges from 7 to 18Ah in size. The larger Case #1 size is purely dimensional - there's no added capacity in the battery.

I think either will do - what is the stock battery's CCA? The 14 gives you 210 CCA which I'd bet is way more than enough for the 360.

Thanks Tim,

Last summer I was running a walmart cheapo lead acid 12V12Ah but my new setup will not alow that to fit + the battery is on it's way out.

Thanks for the tip on the Case type 2, this size will definatly fit my new battery tray. But is the 14ah going to cook anything? Im a little hesitant with anything over 12ah.

Also any tips on local Shorai dealers in the GTA mississaga/Brampton area's?

In general, think of Ah as how long your battery can sustain useage, a high Ah will allow your starter to kick over more if its cold and what not, leave your lights on with your bike off etc. the V is how much powa is going through your wires, higher voltage will cook your stuff, lower voltage your stuff wont be able to work.

This isn't necessary scalable but is a good rule of thumb, putting a 12v deep cycle battery on your bike will likely cook stuff.

You can get Shorai from Glen at Flying Squirrel Motorcycle - I got mine from him. He's got a shop in the East end of Toronto (base of DVP) but also ships.

Just to clear up a ;ittle information,

AH is amp hours, the ability to supply that level of current for that time. 12 AMP/hour is 12 amps for an hour (though I doubt it is true, much like MPG ratings)
A higheer AH rating will not hurt anything. To low and you will drain it faster when not charging. It is best to consider the factory AH rating requires a minimum. Though many go smaller, the electric start or not is not really the factor to consider with AH ratings. while some use lower then stock AH ratings, I think you want the longest time possible to run if the charging system goes bad.

The electric start requires Cold Cranking Amps (CCA). The stock is 110-120 CCA. As long as the battery is rated 110 CCa or better, it will work with the electric start. Coincidentally, the larger AH batteries tend to have larger CCA ratings. But a 12a12n4a Battery is usully 110 CCA, the Lithium, witha lower AH rating is still higher.

My personal feeling is the largest AH rating, that has at least the minimum CCA is best. Extra CCA or AH will never hurt you, except that the battery is usually larger.

I know for sure a 9ah will run a cb550. That said, a 9ah will do juuuusst fine on a 360.
But, like said before, more ah is better, when it comes down to lifespan and load.

Thanks for all the help everyone

One thing to keep in mind when buying lithium ion for our old bikes is the charging system. The stock voltage regulators are not up to standard for a lithium ion battery. LI-ON are not forgiving for voltages over 14.5V or so. 17V is commonplace on a 1970s machine running at redline.

If you plan to use LI-ON, then you also need to plan for a modern regulator.

Thanks Sonreir.
I have the Ricks motorsports high output stator and the regulator/rectifier from DCC. Actually have it sitting on my workbench right now. I need to solder in my neutral light wire off of my old stator harnest.

What's the deal with the "phantom" version? I got the Shorai lfx14a2-bs12, same specs for $135 last year.

The phanton black has the same specs but in a much smaller package. I fabricated a small battery tray that bolts up to the old toolbox mount. So I needed the smallest battery I could get away with. As soon as my battery comes in i'll snap a picture (i really should have started a thread for this thing, but figured i'm not doing anything special here compared to most of the sweet 360's on this site) ANYWAY here are the specs to see the differance
Brand Shorai PHANTOM BLACK
Model APP14A2-BS12
Item Weight 1.5 pounds
Product Dimensions 4.4 x 2.3 x 3.5 inches LxWxH
Brand Shorai LFX
Item Weight 2 pounds
Product Dimensions 6.6 x 5.7 x 3.4 inches LxWxH
Item model number LFX14A2-BS12

Just to point out, Shoria are LI-FE not ION. They are better than LI-ION but this is still true. They need a more modern RR. They are not the same as a cordless drill battery etc.

Timdhawk that is one clean setup!

I ordered the battery from FSmotorcycle just picked it up in person. It's not the phantom black like I thought it was but it is the exact same specs and damn small and light for a 12v14ah battery, so I'm happy with it
