Shorty vs Long Reverse Cone Mufflers

Coast to Coast
I'm going to buy a new set of mufflers for my build. I can't decide between the 27 inch long reverse cones, and the 17 inch reverse cones. Other than price and cosmetics, are there any performance differences between the two?

I put the 26" on my 450 I wanted to retain some of the stock look and length. They look great and sound awesome.

thanks for the input guys. I'm still hoping to hear from one person that's had both. My background is in 2stroke engines, where the length of pipe makes a big difference, so I might be too concerned. I realize it's entirely possible that the only differences are cosmetic, but I will wait for smarter, more experienced voices to weigh in.

Biggest difference in theory is that a longer pipe would act like a longer cone in a chamber. In a street system, the real difference is that longer allows more sound attenuation, so they should be quieter.

that makes sense. longer baffle, more wave reduction. Shorty's it is! My neighbors will be thrilled.

Almost. Longer pipes mean longer duration waves so a wider powerband. Less peaky and they sound better - more mellow, less bark.

Think of it as more length of perforated tube for nose to get absorbed. End result is typically less noise but a better sound

On the street, it's 50% theory and 50% rationale for B/S'ing your buds.

1968 CB77 Superhawk. The stock pipes are long, very long. They're also quite valuable, apparently. I'm going to sell them to a superhawk collector to finance the rest of the build, as I could care less about a true nut and bolt restoration.

Now you tell me.. I have had a CB72 or 77 since the early seventies. Stock, cafe, racer, 250, 260, 305 and 350 and all manner of modifications.

I sold a Read Titan tank and mold for a CB77 a couple of years ago and it came to the US. Were the pipes we're talking about race kit pipes? If so they sell for good money but never worked all that well - just don't tell anyone...

Where's the build thread?

these are just stock OEM pipes, in near perfect condition. Apparently the only option for people doing a restoration, is cheap knockoffs from thailand. Ironic..... aren't these reverse-cones made in Thailand?

I'll start the official build thread when I actually get around to doing something. Right now, i'm just collecting parts. I have to finish a vespa before I can start on this.

Good pipes are getting hard to find. I managed to get a pair for the last rebuild I did, but took forever. Repros are available from time to time, but they are very expensive.

Unfortunately the stock pipes seem to be the best for performance, but they sound a little empty IMHO

I've always found Honda twins like long pipes better than short ones. (even the 160 and 175)
Anything that ends after the rear axle generally works best (take a look at the factory race bikes, they all have long megaphone exhaust, incredibly loud though)
