Single Cylinder Ironhead Sportster

I've been dreaming up this project for a while and decided to just go for it. I haven't put any thought into the direction of style. All I really have planned out for now is the drivetrain. I'm starting with a 79 harley iron head that my old man detonated the transmission. I machined the cases down to remove the transmission. I also rebalanced the crank to compensate for the weight loss of the rear piston and rod. I made a collar on my lathe to take place on the rear rod that displaces oil to the outer rod rollers. I also machined and polished the cam cover.

Mocking up the engine

Nice resurrection of damaged parts!
I had photos of a single lung Sportster motor from years ago that was in a speedway frame. I talked to one of the other old bike "relics" in my area about it and he had actually seen it race. It went well enough - much modified from stock and was running no gearbox and on methanol like all speedway bikes. Don't know where it is today.
What tranny are you thinking about - British or ???
I always like projects like this - keep us posted.
BTW, that little supercharger behind the motor looks neat...

tell me about the little goody on the bench
That is what I was thinking. By the looks it could be set up very easy and has a nice spot to fit.

That really IS half a Harley! Nice work. That will be really awesome in the right frame...what were you thinking, chassis-wise?

That happens to be a Aisin 500cc supercharger. I had to hold it up just to see. And since I hate doing mods that make me lose power I was sold rather easily and decided to go forth with super charging it.

Here are some pictures of it in a sporty frame. I think I'm going pass on the sportster frame as it is to compact for a supercharger and a transmission.

i knew exactly what it was just wanted to know if you were putting it in

Here is the drive pulleys getting set up. I started with a stock drive sprocket turned down to a flange to bolt the drive pulleys to. The inside pulley will be the drive pulley for the super charger and the outer a belt drive back to the transmission. I have a soft tail transmission kicking around the shop and a belt drive kit for it. I have to cut a large amount of material from it to make it fit. I plan on using a shovel head frame for now.

Man, i have seen some mods before, but this, this is something else. I will be watching in awe as this progresses. Many KUDO's to ya. ;)

depending on how short the lash will be to the clutch tranny i may have a frame and swinger that you would be interested in

I'm wondering, would a rebuilt / modified BSA/Norton/Triumph pre-unit tranny work for you? Would be a lot smaller, so it should fit in the Sporty frame (which has to be a lot light than the big twin frame, right)? Awhile back, a Knuck EL featured in one of the magazines had a Brit gearbox setup.
Nice - no, I mean great - work so far.

American motor, Brit tranny, Jap supercharger.

I think you have a WW2 theme going on there.

All you need now is a German sidecar and your set.
