So after replacing the pan seal...it still leaks...

Slantyface

Been Around the Block
So like the topic would suggest, I have a leak. I originally had copious amounts of oil coming from the pan on my 78' CB550K when I bought it. So like a responsible guy I ordered an OEM Honda seal and replaced it. Should have been a routine fix. Like 8 or 10 bolts and done. Right? Put fresh oil in it yesterday, ran it for a while to get it nice and hot, and waited. Came back this morning and the cardboard I left under it had 3 oil spots. Each one larger than a half dollar. To be fair, two of the oil spots look like they came from two drip spots on the same cooling fin. But the trouble area seems to be the back of the pan. The leaks are coming from that end, and nothing up front? Oddly enough I don't think I was the first guy to have this particular problem with this particular pan. I say this because when I took the pan off the first time, there was not only the stock O-ring style seal, but also a cork gasket with some smeary RTV type stuff...
Any ideas guys?

Thanks

Is the edge of either mating surface nicked or dented? Did you check to make sure it was totally flat and not warped? Did you torque it down in a criss-cross pattern?

The pan itself has no flaws in the surface, and I don't recall seeing any blemishes in the case when I looked either. I'll have to check again. I did indeed torque it down in a criss-cross pattern as well. I have no idea if its warped. I never laid it down flat to see if it wasn't even. Never thought to...crap
That'll be something to check for sure when I pull the pan again. I was throwing around the idea of trying some type of sealer (hylomar?) Not necessarily to stop the leak...but to slow it down enough to where I can ride the bike for the rest of the season in good conscience...
I'll be pulling the engine this winter to powder coat the frame...
