Sonic's XS650

SONICJK

Reminds me of...me No, I'm sure of it. I hate him
Yeah, oops I bought ANOTHER bike.
So at present I'm building the SR500 tracker, the RD400, and now this xs650.

Not really sure what I will do with it yet. Probably turn it into a mild brat for daily rider and longer trips.

Anyway, I told myself no more bikes. Then I happened to look on Craigslist because I was bored and there sits a 79 xs650 lookin' good and calling my name. 350 bucks later I own this piece of, well call it what you will.

It was a little rougher than I thought from the photos but most of it is easy cleanup.

This fucker about gave me an aneurism trying to get it running. Thank god for VonYinzer and his suggestion to make the valves perfect.
Two valve adjustments, timing set, cam chain adjusted and it runs like a bat out of hell.

In the getting it started phase I couldn't get a steady spark, so in my usual fashion I got pissed off and ripped the entire wiring harness out of it in a very violent manner.

I rewired it the way it should have come from the factory without all the stupid bullshit (if you need self canceling blinkers, an auxiliary lighting unit (whatever the fuck that is), safety switches, a headlight malfunction indicator, or bright light indicator then fuck you.
Now it has head light, tail light, horn, kill switch, and starter. Nothing more.

Right on that's the way wiring should have come from the factory. And keep telling yourself that's enough bikes lol, I have had as many as thirty one at one time, a few were given to me sure but it has taken awhile to thin down, I regret getting rid of last three cb750's...

Decided to try my hand at an exhaust system from scratch.
Went 2 into 1

Fabbed up a 2-1 collector:

2" outlet

Next up I'm going to make a reverse megaphone for it.

Thanks man, ill either powder coat it or wrap it haven't decided which yet

Nice tig work on the exhaust. Looks good.

I hear ya on the craigslist habit. Craiglist junkie myself. I tell myself the same thing and then I see a deal I can't turn my back on. For $350 that's a steal. Even if you had resell it as is, you'd make some money. Supply is lower in the winter but the deals are usually better as not as many people are looking in the winter.

Helluva a deal, hombre. You gonna keep the mirror on the fork pipe? Very creative :p.

Alright I need some help here.
Bikes are kicking my ass lately.

This XS will not charge.
It blows the fuse as soon as the regulator is hooked up unless the fuse is 20+ amps.

The biggest thing I have found out so far is that when the regulator has power all the wires coming in and out of it are hot, including the black that is supposed to be a ground. This is throwing me for a loop. Even the case of the regulator has 12V. However the brown power wire is soldered directly to the case, so it seems like its always been that way?
Can someone verify this?

There's a green, a brown, and a black on the regulator. When I hook 12V to the brown, the green and the black go to 12 V as well.

Needs clip-ons and a Mr. E triple tree.

No ma'am, this ones gonna be my cruiser. It will get a well padded brat seat and thats about it ;D
It doesn't feel even remotely sporty to me, why anyone wants an xs650 cafe bike is beyond me.
It's so much better suited to chopper or a cruiser.

Unground the brushes.
Put a nylon washer under each of them with nylon screws holding them tight. you dumb fuck

That's what I was thinking since you told me that before, but the charging system is all stock, so I shouldn't have to do that?

yep I do if they will hold up to a shaken time bomb rd
Mr. E's triple trees will give your bike the strength of 1,000 men and the impressive power of the highly sought after unicorn horn.

He has a point, when rich ard helped me rewire my xs it cough on fire a little. It's part of the xs coming of age like a caterpillar turning into a swan and eating its mate or some shit

HA!
Nah it's still got a separate reg and rect that's why I don't know about the brushes.

I did learn last night though that an xs will really smoke the tire like a mufugger. Got pissed at it so Threw the throttle open and within 20 seconds my entire shop was filled with white smoke and I felt all better. A good burnout fixes everything.

just throw a PMA kit into it and a capacitor, and dump the starter. looks really good though

Yeah but I have some money to throw at the sr500 at the moment so this ones low budget for now unfortunately.
Hopefully new brushes will get me by until I can upgrade.
