SR250, get me close to the ton

I think it needs bar end mirrors though and i still need to figure out how to get the turn signals to work again. Must be the LEDs.

I’d love to see yours Jerry. You’re somewhat close location wise lol. Only 550 miles away. Here are tire pics but I need to swap them since they’re 20something years old.

NEVER ride on tires old enough to vote!
True to that /\
I had a crash in march going to MOT: wet tarmac, 7 km/h, crossing and whoosh: brake handle in three / my confidence in thousand pieces. Front tire could buy alcohol by herself ;)

Still, fun looking bike, good color scheme. I like the tail light.
Original blinker flasher has a fuse built in. Meybe it blew?
I have burned mine when I was messing with led blinkers :)
Bodged a shortcut with aluminum foil...

If you have a single flasher indicator on the dash, you'll need the diode adapter from Sparckmoto. And an LED-capable flasher which Sparckmoto also sells, or you can get one at NAPA. If dual dash indicators, you may need a single diode in-line to each signal, particularly if they are the kind with built-in marker lights.

Thanks gents. I’ll dig a little deeper into it when I have time. I’m going to borrow my buddies motorcycle lift, pull the wheels and take them to a shop. He says there’s a place that may do them for a reasonable price. Sub $200 would be nice. While I’m at it I may look at swapping the rear sprocket for some more top end. 1st gear is way too low anyway.

Update. I got a “gel” battery from Amazon for $50. Also found 2 prong led blinkers.

It fires right up and everything functions as it should electronically. I still need to solder and shrink wrap the new indicators.

The bike is odd that it idles high when warm even when I drop the set screw. I bought new tires one here and one on the way but I road it as is to the DMV today to practice the M drivers test. It was a bit challenging with the high idle but the bike had good power and decent response the whole day.

Passed the MC test ! Feeling better on the bike now. Been looking at other bikes but I need to just ride this and save money on my commute. I

Is the idle behaving now? If not, check that the cable isn't holding it open. Idle speed should be set by a throttle stop, not the cable length.

It’s still wonky. The idle is seated on the screw. It seems when ambient temp is warm it idles high and it idles low when it’s cold out.

Hello
The same problem with my SR250: when the bike is warm it idles a bit high.
When adjusted warm, turned off and let cooldown off it idles irregular, sometimes stalls.
I have checked the vacuum connection, gaskets between the carb and intake: no leaking air.
So I have left it running a bit high when warm.

Ya I just live with it. I sometimes get a stumble trying to accelerate into first. I need to add a fuel filter and possibly clean the carb again. I found a replacement carb on Amazon for $60. Might be worth a try.

For your turn signal issue, might I suggest these? They do their own "Flashing", all you do is feed them a steady voltage. I bought a set for Ugly Betty.

If you want to get the highest possible speed out of such a moderately powered bike, I definitely would use narrower tires. Something like 2.75 or 3.00 on the front, and maybe 3.25 or 90/90 rear, as long as the rims are not too wide for those sizes. There is absolutely no need for a 120 section rear tyre, except for looking "cool" when parked.
A 125 roadracer like TZ125 or NSR125 have twice the hp of the SR250, and really narrow tyres.
Narrower tyres will save you money, reduce unsprung and rotating weight, and reduce air resistance as well as rolling resistance. Also, avoid offroad type tread patterns. A smooth road/ sports type tread will have the lowest rolling resistance, and less aero drag. On my RD350, I have 3.00 and 3.50 tyres, and it has over twice the hp of the SR. Heck, I use either 4.00 or 110/90 rear tyres on my XS650.....

Those smaller indicators will also reduce aerodynamic drag a tad. Using a single, smallish bar end mirror will also help. Getting more speed out of an SR250 will have to involve a lot of small improvements.

...and they appeal to my sense of laziness, which translates to, " I don't feel like trying to figure out this flashing issue on a 40yo bike, so Ebay to the recuuuuuuuuuuueee!" Turn-signals are light-years* down the road for me- I've got MANY bridges to cross, first.

*Dad Pun. Yeah, I did it.

Maloburro, it'll be fun regardless!

I solved the turn signal issue. Found a two prong flasher on Amazon and they work perfectly now.

Not worried about speed anymore. Just hoping to turn this into a semi reliable and and economical commuter. I have new tires for it I just need to pull the wheels and take them to a shop. I finally passed my M1 test so I’m stoked. At 65mpg I’m hoping I can save by riding a few days a week in nice weather.
