Just picked this new bike up for my gf for Valentines day (thus the project name) its pretty rare and looks great I think, and for the deal I got it's in surprisingly good shape, as well as there are a surprising number of NOS parts available on Ebay. It's a little two stroker 180cc twin, the plan is to tear it all down and let the gf work on it with me and then its hers when its done so she can learn to share this hobby with me. Will post pics a little later as soon as she gets home with the camera, its in her trunk. should be fun, stay tuned!

Re: "St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YSC1

ok sorta cleaned out our 1 car garage this morning to make some room for this thing, and also snapped some pictures while I was out there, have a look...I will start tearing it down tonight I hope I can get it completely apart within the next day or two and start making a parts list and send some things out to the powdercoater and painter.

thanks
Ricky

Re: "St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YSC1

Nice, a bath, splash of paint, seat, the odd part and good to go!

Got mine an 83 750 Shadow last summer. I had her first try it in the back yard on the grass. She got 2' and the bike was on its side. "K honnie, this is how you pick it up"...

She spent about about two weeks running up and down the back ally in first through third gear learning clutch control and shifting. Then another few weeks in our residential neighborhood. We are talking about a trip though the rocky mountains this summer to go camping.

Have fun with your project!

Re: "St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YSC1

Just got done pulling it almost completely apart, but since she hasnt seen it yet I threw the swingarm, wheel, seat and tank back on just resting there so she can see what it basically looks like. made a lot of progress today it feels like, have to go to dinner for the vday but will post pics of my progress when I get home.......this is where im gonna start asking a lot of "hey how do you do this..." questions :)

Re: "St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YSC1

by the way, my girlfriend, Chelsea, has chimed in on somewhat of what she wants just based on seeing pictures of it and she said "I want it to be a glittery cream color and red and I want the same helmet as Zooey Deschanel has in Yes Man" so, so far thats what I have to go on, so it looks like the frame, swingarm and other odd bits will get the red powder treatment, and the tank and side covers will get the "glittery cream" color, once i figure out what that means specifically :). i have a pretty good picture in my head about what its going to look like so lets hope it turns out half as cool as I imagine it will. Still debating on what bars to run, and whether or not to run the fenders, we'll see what happens when I get to that though.

Re: "St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YSC1

Are you painting the creme yourself? I think it's DuPont that make a "prismatic" mid-coat. Lay the creme down first and get the prismatic stuff (it will look like tinkerbell sneezed on it) and then the clearcoat. I can get a pic of it on top of black paint if you want.

Whenever you get to it, can you measure the underside of that tank? Looks like a good project

Re: "St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YSC1

haha no I wont be painting it myself, I would love to try it if I had the space and time but unfortunately I dont. I do however work all the time so at least paying someone to powder and paint wont hurt me too bad. My CB750 has already cost me a small fortune so I'm trying to do as much of this myself as I can, but there are certain things (paint and powder) that I will be sending out for, also because its for my girlfriend and so I want it to be absolutely perfect. But thanks for the tip, I may try that when doing my own stuff down the road or on the next project (once she learns to ride and I can get her one bigger bike). But I do definately want a super super sparkly paint, I'm thinking something by House of Kolor, I dunno....

Re: "St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YSC1

Oh by the way, yes I will absolutely measure the tank, just try to be pretty specific about what you want measured and I'll try to get out and do it tonight after dinner, if not then I will do it when I get home from work tomorrow.

p.s. I love the tank too, it was almost the whole reason I bought it, kinda reminds me of a BMW toaster tank or a CB450 black bomber tank, I'm a sucker for kneepads :)

Re: "St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YSC1

Pretty much the width from mount to mount under the tank, tunnel height, distance from the base of the tank to the front mounts, and the over all width. But no rush on my part! Just curious if it's possible to use a similar tank on mine

Thanks man!

Re: "St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YSC1

ya no problem I'll check it out, its a super cool tank I'm kinda jealous cause i think at the end of the day hers will look nicer than mine its definitely getting a more thorough build (and for much less money). But I gotta tell you though, if youre interested in my tank I would say search for one first cause I imagine it will be very difficult to find, it's a pretty rare bike. If i end up not using the tank though (i don't see that happening, but there;s a chance i guess) and if it will fit yours then I will ship it out to you for the cost of shipping and maybe a bit more to cover whatever else I put on it, but not much. Anyway I'll measure it and we'll see what happens. super cool tank though.

Re: "St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YSC1

So today as soon as I can get off work and get home, I am gonna start getting into the motor as far as cleaning and painting (I will be painting this myself) the plan is to do the cylinders black and the rest of it silver, so here is where im gonna need some help, pretend like I've never done this before (cause I've never done this before), any advice or direction I can get on cleaning the motor, degreasing, prepping for paint, masking, any of that would really be appreciated! Mostly I'm mostly curious about prepping and masking, cleaning I figure is just some solvent and a little elbow grease nothing special there. I will not be tearing the motor apart since its only got 2500 miles on it, so is it possible to media blast the motor complete somehow? Thanks! I'll be starting as soon as I get home

oh and Big R, I didnt forget about you I'll measure the tank tonight too and hopefully I cann get some pictures up to show my measurements so you can see exactly from which point to which point I measured.

Stay tuned!

So perfect, thanks! that'll save me three hundred bucks on a davida helmet!

Re: "St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YSC1

Like I said, no rush on measuring the tank. Just curious to the sizes.

If you do decide to media blast the motor, make sure to use baking soda - not sand. It's near impossible to keep every little grain out of the motor.

Ok, so, done with Day 2 in the garage, my roommate usually works nights and his parking spot is the one right in front of the garage so I can never get in there unless he is at work and for the last couple days he's been home, luckily today I got home before he got home from school and was able to get in the garage first so got a bunch done. Will post pics momentarily as soon as the photobucket upload is done (using a DSLR so the picture sizes are huge)

aaalllsssoooooo, took your measurements Big R, so I will psot another reply with the pics and measurements laid out so you can see exactly where i measured cause I wasnt exactly sure what you wanted so I took every one I could think of, I will edit the shots in MS paint (you know its funny I have adobe master suite CS4 and dont know how to use any of it :) )

So give me a few minutes and I will have this all uploaded. Good day so far, anytime I can take a 12pack out to the garage, and tinker with the bike im having an ok day :)

be right back with loads of pics...

K here we go with the new pics

Lots of disorganized parts cause I forgot to pick up some ziplock bags thinking I had some at home :/ oh well

almost all the way there, tank and seat just resting so the gf could see it, i got a little overzealous before she ever even saw it

Don't have spanner wrenches in the garage and didnt think this was a good candidate for the ole' whack it with a hammer and a screwdriver in the notch technique
DSC00918.jpg

Big R, I will edit these pics in paint with the measurements and locations added in, cause im super tech savvy ;)

Thats it for today, hopefully I can get everything out for blasting and powder this weekend, and maybe even get some other bits off for paint, but I'd like to get the wheels out to be rebuilt (new spokes and hoops, stainless spokes and alum. hoops, depending on money) and get the hubs either powdered or polished im not sure which yet, it's weird im not really a fan of polished stuff, so if I send them for powder will probably get silver, and I just want to get the frame and wheelset done so I can get a rolling chassis. Anyhow, stay tuned, this is the first time I've ever done this; I have my CB750 out at Lossa Engineering and that has cost me a fortune so far but with this one I would like to go ahead and give it a shot for myself, and worse come to worse if there are a few things I can't do i will have to pay someone, but in the end I think it will cost me much less than the CB and hopefully look really good, I'm sure I'll have tons of questions and as everyone knows, NOTHING ever goes according to plan so it should be fun at least. hope everyone enjoys seeing the progress as much as I do on this and on all of your builds (i know I dont post very much on other threads but I see them all, i make sure of it) keep up the good work and have a great night!!

Big R I'll try to get those measurement pics up by tonight, and if not then sometime tomorrow while I'm at work pretending to do something important :)

I second the soda blasting. I used glass bead on my engine case it hen spen three days cleaning them out and then I went to install a plug and it hit a grain of glass. now I'm looking for more cases because i dont want to go through with building my engine just to have it blow up cause i missed a grain of glass.

dude that sucks :/ im sorry to hear it.....ya with a motor like this that I think will be difficult to replace parts on I think I'm just gonna go with trying some degreaser and cleaning it as best as i can at home before I opt for blasting it....btw, if I do get some soda in any of the ports or what have you, is that ok? sorry but I'm new to this sort of thing.
