"St. Valentine" - 67 Yamaha YCS1

The soda is water soluble so you can just rinse it with water. Are you planning on rebuilding the engine? If not then just clean the thing with a degreaser and hit with some paint or polish and call it a day. Its your first build no need to go all crazy with it. So youre having a bike built by Lossa that should be cool. After the plug incident I decided I would be better off with a set of cases that fit the frame correctly for what ever reason the 82 gpz engine does not fit in the 85 frame. So it just kinda made my mind up for me.

ooh, that makes more sense then, and no I do not plan to rebuild the motor, in fact I'd like to do as little motor work as possible probably just a gasket kit for good measure and pretty it up a bit and call it a day. I'm not a fan of manual labor so polishing is pretty much out, a little silver engine paint and thats it I think. Even though its my first build on a bike, I have built many many race cars, and since I have it all the way torn down I may as well hit every part, there's no sense in cutting corners, plus it's not for me and the gf has never ridden before (and is super accident prone) so I'm in no rush to finish this one, I'll take my time til I feel like everything is absolutely perfect. I have a vision in my head and I'll be disappointed if it turns out to be any less, it can end up different than I imagine, but not a poorer job at all

Yep clean and paint then. If youre gonna do a gasket kit then youre gonna pull the motor apart then right? I'm not saying cut corners but no need to get crazy with it. do it right just not overboard. Did this bike run before you tore it down? those two strokes are real bad about leaking at the crank seals and causing the engines to meltdown. My dad has a like new rd he rode it for a month and guess what the crank seal leaked and he had to rebuild the crank and the top end. just something to keep in mind. If you do decide to tear it down you can make a soda blaster yourself. keep it up.

well the motor only has 2500 miles on it so I'm hoping for the best, and if I need to completely tear the motor down for gaskets and seals then I will probably take it down to Lossa for that, but I will try to do as much as I can for myself to cut cost down. But since I have never dealt with a two stroke at all then I am up for any suggestions on things to look for. The motor, although very dirty with lots of mud and pine needles, it seems to be in good shape as far as leakdown and compression goes, my fingers are crossed, but no it was not running when I got it, it had sat for a number of years from what I'm told and the battery was completely dry and thouhg I havent taken the carbs apart, which I plan to do in the next couple days here, I'm sure theyre in need of some cleaning and a rebuild. So while I would have like to get it running prior to tearing it down, I figured fuck it if the motor needs work I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, honestly these motors are so easy to pull that if it doesnt run once the wiring, battery, and carbs have been replaced/rebuilt, then it wont really be a big deal to pull the motor and have it gone over. But still, hoping for the best, and thats a ways away anyhow, lots of stuff to do and learn to do before that, will probably first be tackling the forks and the brakes/hubs/wheelset once I send the frame and swingarm out for powdercoating, just so that I can get a rolling chassis as soon as possible; once thats done im sure it will be a slow progression from there with all the little odds and ends to get it completely back together.

No worries on measuring the tank - now that I've seen the underside it would take too much welding/fabbing to be any use to me (at least on my current project)

And that top nut that you gave the finger too? I've taken them off with a gentle touch and vice grips/channel locks before. Hell, you could probably use a monkey wrench as long as you don't lose your temper.

I ditched my "steering damper" after the knob cracked. Just found a big nut off of a later year to replace it

Well Rick if you havent worked on a motorcycle engine before then two stroke would be a good place to start. Like I said earlier about the seals it does not matter how many miles are on it, its the age thing that gets them especially after sitting for years. My dads rd had 7000 miles on it and its 73 and the seals went bad on it. It might be worth splitting the cases and changing them. Like I said they are quite simple to work on, no cams, no chains, just a couple piston a crank and a tranny. Just my two cents just would hate to see you have to spend more money in the long run than you would have.

Well thanks I appreciate the advice, and if it's that simple then I may as well, in hindsight I kinda wish I had gotten it running first but, oh well, I'll start diggin into that tonight then.

After the gf gets off work we're gonna go out to the garage and kick around the color scheme idea's she has and so far I think this is the way it will turn out, and p.s anyone who is great with photo shopt if you wanna take one of the profile shots and give us a mock up of what this would look like that would super duper cool ;) anyway:

Frame/Swingarm: Red or silver (powder)
Triple Trees: Silver (powder)
Motor: Silver (paint)
Tank: The actual tank body will get the sparkly off-white cream color, and the part that is chrome onthe tank will get red powder
Side panels/oil tank: Sparkly off-white cream color same as the tank
Fork ears and dust boots: sparkly off-white cream color
Headlight bucket: undecided between the off-white or red
Rear shock dust covers: whatever the headlight bucket gets
Center stand and battery electronics trays will get the same silver as the triple trees
and then I think thats it, I will have the seat pan blasted and powdered black then just refoamed and wrapped same as factory maybe a little thinner though.
And if I can find a reasonably priced NOS taillight assembly then I will probably retain the fenders as well just get them cleaned up and shiny.

Any thoughts or suggestions (or like I said photoshop mock-ups) will be well appreciated.

also new anme suggestions are welcome as well, the gf and I are mulling that one over since "St. Valentine" doesn't quite roll off the tongue per se.

Thanks!! Ricky

You could name the little bike the Asama. Thats the first race Yamaha ever won. On a YA-1 Just a thought...

From Yamahas website:
That same year (1955), Yamaha entered its new YA-1 in the two biggest race events in Japan. They were the 3rd Mt. Fuji Ascent Race and the 1st Asama Highlands Race. In these debut races Yamaha won the 125cc class. And, the following year the YA-1 won again in both the Light and Ultra-light classes of the Asama Highlands Race.

Asama, Mount (äsä'mä), or Asama-yama (-yä'mä), peak, 8,425 ft (2,568 m) high, central Honshu, Japan, near Komoro. One of the largest and most active volcanoes in Japan, it erupted violently in 1783 and has frequent minor eruptions.

Asama...hmm...not bad i will run that one by the gf, though I think she may want something a little more girly, I like it though...

Sooo, I have been searching the ebay for kneepads or a complete tank and have found nothing so far, i am pretty sure I can get the tiny dents out of the chrome panels with no problem, the problem I have is that while I have both kneepads and they seem ok they are pretty dreid out and I dont want to ruin them taking them off the tank, which i have to do in order to tank the tank apart and get it all painted, any idea's on how to go about that? or ways to recondition the rubber?

Also, will be stopping by the harbor freight on the way home tonight to pick up some spanner wrenches and a grinder and get the lower tree and stem out and start detabbing, yay! Then saturday with any luck I hope I can pick up the CB and also drop off the YCS frame to the coater!

Cool to see another early small bore two stroke build while I am doing mine! Good luck on this I will be folowing yours as I build mine for some inspiration.

I'll sell ya this one... $100
If ya want better pics let me know...

It's YL something? Off a trail version I believe... Should be a direct fit? I will take pick of the under side so you can compare. Along w/ better pics of the tank in general.

So I sit for hours in the garage trying to clean up the frame and everything else so I can send them out finally, and to look at the pictures it looks like I didnt do anything, but i promise i cleaned for hours, there is like clay stuck to the lower portions of the frame that will not come off with anything, not even chemicals and a pressure washer, so I did the best I could and I think im gonna just send it somewhere to get cleaned and blasted. anyway here is how it looks now:

Frame getting a degreaser bath

Motor after about 2 hrs of cleaning (this stuff does not come off, but oddly enough it was easier to get off than the crap on the frame.

A few things that are ready to go off for blasting and powder finally

The tank stripped off all its parts ready to go for blasting/stripping

Looking better. Did you end up getting the crap off the frame? Did you try a scraper or maybe some that bug and tar remover for cars? Might help. Are you gonna pull that engine apart?Keep it up

No, I didnt get everything off of the frame, i scraped it for a while, and wire brushed it, but i think im just gonna take it somewhere to have it hot tanked for a few bucks cause i just dont want to put in the hours of labor just cleaning it. I really dont want to pull the motor apart, but I think I might anyway, im not 100% on that one just yet.

Hey! We just got one of these in our garage to rebuild for a friend. Did you ever finish it? Do you have any pics? Let us know!
Thanks Dylan
